Certificates Approved by Graduate Studies Committee and Currently Offered (15)

CSUN has a policy established several decades ago and revised along the way that guides
how certificate programs must be structured and approved. For credit certificates, the policy
requires, among other things, formal approval by the Faculty Senate Standing Committee on
Graduate Studies. The following certificates have that formal approval and are therefore
recognized certificate programs for CSUN.

Early Intervention for Children with Special Needs/Birth to 5 Years)

The following programs have been formally approved and are recognized by CSUN but are not
currently being offered by the relevant departments. They could be restarted at any time but
only with the list of courses approved originally for the certificated. They could also be
restarted with changes by seeking approval for changes from the Faculty Senate Standing
Committee on Graduate Studies as well as from the required departmental and college
committees in keeping with each college’s internal protocol.

   1. 220 = College Student Personnel Services (EPC)

   2. 240 = Computers in Instruction (SED)

Certificates Offered But Not Approved By Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) (7)

As we attempted to gather information on the credit certificates offered by CSUN, we
discovered that over the years a number of departments had attempted to create a credit
certificate program without going though the required approval process. Since it has not
always been easy to locate the certificate program policy, this is likely just the result of
incomplete information. However, there is no provision within CSUN for offering a credit
certificate that has not gone through the formal approval process. In that light, the following
certificates seem to be thought to exist at the department level but do not actually exist as a
University Certificate program. Colleges and departments should probably discontinue any
marketing (web sites, catalog, etc) of these unapproved certificates and/or seek some form of
fast track review and approval from the Faculty Senate Standing Committee on Graduate
Studies. The CSUN certificate program policy can be accessed at
http://tsengcollege.csun.edu/policies/III_A.pdf for details. It should be noted that some of
these would-be certificates also have other issues (like not the required minimum number of
courses, not the required level of courses, etc) so a review of the policy requirements may lead
to some “tweaking” of the curriculum of some of these programs before seeking approval.
