Because high school language arts addresses literacy in all levels of communication (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and the skills are interwoven, we find it difficult to break them down.
After looking at the subdomains in the program of studies, we ahve attempted to compile a list of essential questions and essential vocabulary. Much of this overlaps with the Reading document
so we have not listed units of study, but will ahve them embedded in the Reading document. Literary writing, for example, will occur during the units on short stories, poetry, and drama;
transactive writing will occur during the study of persuasive techniques and informational reading.

Essential Questions for Writing
1. What writing elements or techniques affect a reader's interpretation or understanding or purpose and audience?
2. How do types of grammactical conventions (frammar, usage, sentence structure) contribute to the overall quality of a piece of writing?
3. How does the purpose of the three types of writing ( writing to learn, writing to demonstrate learning, and writing fro publication) differ?
Essential Vocabulary: Vocab. listed by the subdomain in which it is introduced. Much of the vocabulary will overlap in different sub domains; however, we only listed each word or phrase.

Big Idea: Writing Content
To communicate effectively, students should be able to write for a variety of authentic purposes and audiences in a variety of forms, connecting to prior knowledge and the students'
understanding of the content. In their writing, students should be able to create a focused purpose and controlling idea and develop ideas adequately considering the purpose, audience and form.

Academic Expectations
1.11 Students write using appropriate forms, conventions, and styles to communicate ideas and information to different audiences for different purposes
