Program Description:

The Gifted Education Program is an academically challenging program for students in Grades 1-8 who
have met specific academic criteria established for incoming students in August, 2009. These include
the following:

       1. A grade of “A” in reading and mathematics for the last two years (one year for grades K
               and 1).
       2. Teacher and Principal Recommendations including teacher observation rubric.
       3. Other assessments as determined by the screening committee including State and
               district assessments.

The academic curriculum for each grade level is based on the high standards set for all of Malden’s
elementary schools. However, the Gifted Education Program will offer opportunities for advanced
enrichment and specialized instruction by teachers specially trained in Gifted and Talented Education
to ensure the students’ academic needs are being met.

The Classroom:
At the Linden Gifted Education Program, each classroom will take on an enriched learning
environment for teaching and learning with innovative, instructional methods and techniques to
address the academic and creative talents of the children. For example, coope rative learning groups
help to provide and enhance for different learning styles; writing involves brainstorming, drafting,
conferencing, publishing, and, of course use of technology; journals help children organize and
express their ideas – the technology will help students visually (or graphically) communicate their
ideas; interdisciplinary/thematic units help children connect with relationships between and among
the subjects – an important element for children as they begin to understand real world issues; and
critical thinking skills – the teacher’s assessment of the child’s higher order thinking skills and the
child’s understanding of his/her outcomes as evidenced by performance indicators (demonstrated
knowledge, knows what is expected in achieving high grades).

The Faculty:
Each teacher is committed to the challenges of teaching in an academically enriched classroom.
Furthermore, the teacher and principal have participated in staff training with specialists from the
University of Connecticut to ensure the teachers have the necessary skills to implement the innovative
methods and practices of Gifted Education to benefit each child.

race, religion, ethnic origin, color, age, sex, or handicapping condition either in its employment
policies or in the enrollment of students.
