Diehl, Master Teacher UT Austin, Gloria Munguía, Teacher St. Andrew’s Middle School The traditions seen in both Mexican bark painting and the work of Texas native Carmen Lomas Garza are drawn together in this workshop that presents a model for integrating language skills in the Spanish classroom. Participate in the step by step process of replicating bark painting and practice activities with the art work of Lomas Garza that will motivate students to communicate in Spanish using authentic materials. This integration of skills will be evaluated on revised Spanish AP Language Examination in 2007. An extensive handout will be provided. Then these lessons will be tied to the Spanish Verb Wall. Colors, fonts, graphics, symbols and locations present the entire Spanish verb system, allowing you to break free of the restrictions of teaching verbs by "conjugation"--defined here as "rote memorization of verb forms in a set sequence." When you encounter a verb form that is "beyond the level" of the class, the Verb Wall allows you to show what it means and how it relates to what you have already learned. These "teachable moments" allow you to plant seeds for future learning! You will see short extracts from "The Downfall", "Berlin is in Germany", and "Rosenstraße" and learn techniques on how to present them in interactive and intercultural language classes. You will also learn how to use the special features of DVDs for language teaching purposes. The focus of background information will be on Berlin as the showcase of German history. Each participant will receive suggestions for lesson plans for each of the movies. Ideas will range from games and songs to assessment and review and will cover areas of vocabulary, grammar, and culture in the foreign language classroom. This workshop will be interactive, and participants will receive a packet of strategies ready to use upon re-entering the classroom. At Kolter Elementary, students are exposed to Spanish, French, and Japanese in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The workshop demonstrates the enthusiasm of young children for language learning. Participants will see lively music, chanting, games, art and literature connecting the five C's and receive fresh, exciting ideas and strategies to integrate LOTE with the core curriculum.
