        2008 Chairman I am honored to be your Chairman for 2008. Working in and for this com-
                                        munity is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life. I grew up in
                                        Thomasville. I watched the Albany news, knew the leaders, the work being
                                        done to develop the area and the political strength existing here.
                                           Thirty five years later, and now as a leader myself, I want to see Albany
                                        continue to support the successes of the past and demonstrate our ability to
                                        support new successes in the future.
                                           In 2006, Governor Sonny Perdue, along with the Georgia Chamber of
                                        Commerce, launched the Georgia Work Ready Initiative. This initiative allows
                                        workers to take a free job assessment to become eligible to receive a certifi-

                                        certificate guarantees that workers have the reasoning, reading, and basic
                                        math skills necessary to be successful in the workplace.
                                           The initiative also provides for job profiling whereby Georgia employers can

                                        sions about hiring, training and program development.
        The third part of the initiative calls for Certified Work Ready Communities. These communities are those
      that can demonstrate through the percentage of certified workers that they have the talented workforce to fill
      current and future jobs. Through the work of Harriet Hollis here at the Chamber, Dougherty is one of 24
      counties that has received a $35,000 grant to assist in the Certified Work Ready Community process.
      Governor Perdue in announcing the grants in July said, “Certified Work Ready Communities will transform our
      state and show that Georgia has the talent necessary to staff existing jobs and master the innovative technolo-
      gies new jobs will require tomorrow.”
        My goal for 2008 is for Dougherty County to become a Certified Work Ready Community. We need 2,585
      workers to become certified through assessments broken down as follows:
             Existing Workforce Private Sector - 1246; Existing Workforce Local, State or Federal Government - 31;
             High School Graduates entering the workforce - 9; GED - 79; Technical College Graduates - 165;
             Unemployed Adults - 685
        As you can see this will be no small task. The Education Division, under the leadership of Jenny Collins, is
      developing a strategy to achieve the results that we need. Please consider having your current workforce
        Let’s work together to make Dougherty County a Certified Work Ready Community so that we can support
      the successes of the past and demonstrate our ability to support new successes in the future.

There was tension in the air as the Marines battled the civilians at the October 31, 2007 Salty Sandbagger held at Doublegate
Country Club. The event started off with lunch where there was friendly talk and strategic planning. After lunch the teams
took in some practice shots and were given final instructions before boarding their golf carts. The Marines played a good
game but once again the civilians came out victorious in a very close competition.
