Background and origins

In (1985), the U.K.-based National Freight Consortium (NFC), which had recently been privatized by the British government, acquired several independent warehouse and transportation management companies in the United States. The new company was rebranded Exel and the Americas headquarters was established in Westerville, Ohio, in (1992). Over the 16 years that followed, Exel experienced customer growth and expanded operations to include Canada, Latin America and South America. Its portfolio of solutions also grew to include transportation management, freight consolidation, contract packaging, contract manufacturing, demand planning and other supply chain services. In late 2005, Exel was acquired by Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), creating the world’s leading provider of contract logistics, global air freight, and global ocean freight services. The new contract logistics business was branded DHL Exel Supply Chain and provides integrated supply chain solutions around the world. The contract logistics business in the United States and Canada continues to operate under the Exel brand, with the headquarters for the Americas region remaining in Westerville.
