Position Announcement:       Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Recovery Fellowship
                             Foreclosure Legal Assistance

Position Summary: Through funding provided by Equal Justice Works and Lone Star Legal Aid
(LSLA), LSLA announces an opening for a one-year attorney position as an AmeriCorps
Recovery Fellow in LSLA’s Home Protection Unit (HPU), to be stationed at LSLA’s Houston
Office, beginning before September 30, 2009.

Background: LSLA is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal help to low-income
individuals and families who have immediate needs but cannot afford an attorney. LSLA assists
homeowners facing the loss of their homes through community education, client representation
and counseling, negotiation with lenders, and litigation.

Responsibilities: The AmeriCorps Recovery Fellow will handle a caseload of foreclosure,
bankruptcy, and quiet title actions; work with lenders to negotiate loan modifications; conduct
community legal education and collaborate with housing counseling agencies and other
community partners to promote homeownership preservation.

Qualifications: Candidates must be able to be members of the Texas Bar; have experience with
litigation or advocacy work related to foreclosure or predatory lending issues; have a strong
understanding of issues affecting low-income individuals and the problems faced by
impoverished communities; have excellent litigation and advocacy skills; have the ability to
work cooperatively in a team environment; have the ability to collaborate with community
groups and public officials; have comfort conducting outreach and speaking in public; and have a
strong record of professionalism. The ability to speak Spanish or other relevant language skills
is a plus.

Compensation: Compensation for this position is set at $48,500 which includes:
         $22,800 AmeriCorps living allowance
         $25,700 supplemental benefits to reimburse the Fellow for certain expenses (housing,
                  education loans, etc.)
The Fellow will also receive:
         Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance coverage
         $4,725 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service
         Eligibility for student loan forbearance and interest accrual payment upon successful
         completion of service
         Payment of Bar association dues
