Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
2008 Collier County Recipients of the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award
Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union (FCU) and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar are receiving Collier
County’s 2008 Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for their extraordinary support of the Collier County
Public Schools. This award is given by the Commissioner of the Florida Department of Education on Thursday,
April 10, in conjunction with the Florida Partners in Education Conference in Jacksonville.
“The commitment of Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar to the
teachers and students of Collier County is tremendous,” states Susan McManus, President of The Education
Foundation of Collier County. “Their passion for building strong communities by supporting education is an
incredible gift to Collier County.”
Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union is an exemplary partner to Collier County Public Schools through its
employee volunteerism and financial contributions through Suncoast for Kids Foundation, to date, $68,000 for
2007-08. They support individual student success by providing a $1,000 scholarship for students at each of the
eight high schools, and by supporting the Take Stock in Children program. Suncoast also impacts many students
by providing teachers with leadership and professional development opportunities. This year, Suncoast has
underwritten the year-long, community-based leadership development program for 44 teachers in the Academy of
Teachers. In addition, they have provided teachers with classroom grants to fund innovative classroom practice.
Created in 1998, the Suncoast for Kids Foundation is sponsored entirely by the credit union, and 100 percent of
funds are contributed to organizations and initiatives that assist children in the communities Suncoast Schools FCU
serves. These contributions to help support teachers and students is a direct benefit from the new Suncoast for
Schools Rewards Check Card, which accrues five cents for public schools every time a member uses the debit card
in a signature transaction.
"It fulfills our purpose to work within the communities we serve. To be recognized in this manner is an honor we
appreciate,” states Tom Dorety, President and CEO of Suncoast Schools FCU. “We are also very excited that
public school children in Collier County can now join us in membership which combines our two core interests -
education and financial literacy."
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar has provided extraordinary support—$20,000—for students and teachers
in Collier County in 2007-08. Fleming’s hosts an exclusive dinner for 50 guests which is a significant fundraiser
for the Take Stock in Children program. And, they have expanded their commitment to support leadership
development opportunities for teachers through the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program. In addition to
hosting a planning session and luncheon for 45 teachers over the summer, they also hosted 100 teachers for
a congratulatory luncheon in November. Fleming’s recognizes the invaluable contribution that teachers make to
our community and take great pride in supporting them.
“Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar is truly honored to partner with the Education Foundation of Collier
County,” states Rick Poole, Operating Manager. “Since our opening in 2004, Fleming's and the Education
Foundation have raised money for numerous scholarships and outreach programs throughout Collier County. There
is no better reward as a business owner than to have the opportunity to enrich the lives of our children our
community. We thank Collier County residents, business partners and the Education Foundation for affording us
the opportunity to continue to give back and look forward to many years of partnering with local charitites and The
