Appointment Type: Exempt Appointment.
This appointment is exempt from civil service examination in accordance with section 10.104. -13 of the City
Charter. The Department of Child Support Services Legal Division employs about six (6) attorneys responsible for
performing legal work in Family Law.

Position Description:
This position is for a child support attorney for the City and County of San Francisco Department of Child Support
Services and is part of the City’s 8177 Attorney (Civil/Criminal) class. Salary will be dependent on experience.

Incumbents in this class are responsible for all civil and quasi-criminal legal work, including case and document
preparation and court presentation in the establishment and enforcement of family support orders in the name of the
State and local Departments of Child Support Services. Depending on experience, the knowledge and abilities of
the incumbent may include:

Knowledge of
 Civil law and procedure, especially as it relates to family law and debt collection practice
 Civil discovery practice
 Federal and state regulations affecting child support collection and compliance issues
 Procedures of practice in bankruptcy, workers compensation and unemployment insurance courts/hearings
 Legal research resources

Ability to
 Effectively manage a high volume caseload by prioritizing work into manageable tasks appropriate to the
  problems presented
 Effectively review, analyze, research, develop and present legal issues and arguments orally and in writing
 Work as a supportive member of a team of attorneys
 Supervise, motivate and encourage support staff to assist in the production of an excellent end product
 Work well with the local family law bench and bar
 Speak and write in a clear and effective manner
 Present a professional, courteous public demeanor

Minimum Qualifications:
 Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
 Active member in good standing with the California State Bar

Desirable Qualifications:
 Experience as an attorney or child support officer with a child support agency or experience with a high volume
  family law/domestic violence/legal advocacy or community based organization with child support issues as a
  component
 Strong computer skills in Word, Excel and/or case management systems
 Bi-lingual in Spanish or Cantonese

Disaster Service Workers:
All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local
law (California Government Code section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a
loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as
assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Selection Process:

knowledge, skills and abilities to determine the best-qualified candidates who will be invited to an oral interview. Only
those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in a further
