“Recycled Auto Parts - Better Than Ever to Buy!”
Never before, have recycled auto parts, been so easy and attractive to buy.

The auto parts recycling industry has come a long way since the old days of “junk yard dogs” and greasy “wrecker” yards.
These days the leading facilities are devoted to good customer service, stocked with quality, cleaned and tested second-
hand parts, often with 3, 6 or up to 12 month warranty! The sales counters are clean and inviting, staff are highly trained,
new and non-genuine parts are often available from the „one-stop‟, while the business is environmentally compliant! And
after-all, recycled parts are much more affordable than paying new price.

How do you choose an auto parts recycler?

The Auto Parts Recyclers Association of Australia Inc. (APRAA) has been striving for improved industry quality for well over
20 years. APRAA members all comply with a Code of Conduct. Many quality operators have joined APRAA to promote their
commitment to quality. Some have gone a step further by electing to qualify under the APRAA industry Accreditation
Scheme, a quality and environmental system, from a one star level up to the highest five star level. Customers would be
well-served buying from APRAA members, so look out for the APRAA logo. Take a look on the APRAA website for a list of
reliable auto parts recyclers via or get a copy of the APRAA Accreditation Directory.

What if you can’t find the part?

“If your preferred auto parts recycler doesn‟t have the part they will often find it for you” notes Alan Marshall, the APRAA
Executive Officer. “For many customers, whether trade or retail, getting a part can be as simple as a phone call, or looking
up the Internet to shop on-line”. APRAA promotes its industry wide “On-Line Parts Locator” to support its members via its
website . Your request will be viewed live by APRAA recyclers all over Australia - a most effective way of
finding that hard to get part.

Commitment to quality

“Many potential customers, may not be aware of the industry‟s commitment to quality and the environment,” highlighted
Alan. “Perhaps some are not aware that warranties are now standard practice in many facilities. An increasing buyer of
recycled parts has been the insurance sector. “Over the last few years, we have seen increased interest and support from
insurance companies as they realise the advantages of using recycled parts, while supporting the environment” said Alan.
“After all „re-use‟ is the simplest form of recycling and our members play an integral part in the environmental processing of
End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), their parts and materials.”

Something for the kids

Oh yes, if you happen to be shopping with your kids, call into an APRAA member and ask for a “Children‟s Colouring Book”,
illustrating the automotive dismantling/recycling process. ”If they haven‟t got one, ask them to get them in, from the APRAA
National Office” said Alan. “Let‟s face it, our kids and recycling have a lot in common … they are our future!”

APRAA is the peak, national association for the auto parts recycling/dismantling industry (refer ). APRAA is
an affiliate chapter of the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) based in the USA ( ).

APRAA was the dream of a small but visionary group of auto recyclers who wanted to make a difference, to progress the
auto industry from „wreckers‟ to „recyclers‟. This key group set the foundations to harness an active and passionate industry,
to achieve a recognised and respected national representation for auto parts recyclers/dismantlers throughout Australia.
APRAA is currently working with the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council to progress a Code of Practice for auto

More than 500,000 vehicles are retired from Australian roads each year. Recent reports by both the National Motor Vehicle
Theft Reduction Council and the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage found that there are significant
levels of pollution and criminal activity resulting from non-existent or inadequate controls on the illegitimate operators in the

Overseas research has shown End-of-Life-Vehicle (ELV) contaminants that enter the environment include fluids such as oil,
petrol, brake fluids, coolant etc as well as toxic heavy metals such as lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, along with
PCBs. While the metal fraction of ELVs is generally recovered by metal recyclers, at least 100,000 tonnes of waste from
ELVs is generated annually, representing a substantial resource loss.
