The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is making a strategic shift in education
from only public practice training to best overall training. Under this proposal, carefully selected
corporations and government departments are eligible to be CA Training Offices. Public
accounting training will continue to be offered only by CA firms.
Given the public recognition for Nexen's governance, ethics, and integrity, Nexen was one of the
first companies from across Canada to be approved as a Chartered Accountant (CA) Training
Office in January 2008. We currently have six employees pursuing their CA with us.
We are proud to offer the following:
- a corporate culture that expects our accounting and finance people to be strategic partners for
the businesses they support. You will learn the oil and gas business whether you are a member of
the Canadian, International or corporate teams. You will support Nexen's activities through
strategic advice, analysis and the development of key reports through which the financial health
of the organization can be determined and critical business decisions can be made;
- a diverse company with operating activities in Canada, the US, Yemen and the UK which
provides exposure to US, Canada and International general accounting principles;
- a growth company with expansion into new energy development frontiers including: synthetic
crude and shale gas, which translates into exposure to gathering and reporting project accounting,
systems development, budgeting and approaches to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of
new growth area risk management, controls and governance processes;
- a best-practice company that strives to improve reporting capabilities through enterprise wide
systems such as SAP;
- a company that is traded on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges and is a leader in
corporate governance, integrity, disclosure and financial reporting.
CA Training Program Information:
Nexen’s CA Training program will be structured. All current academic standards, prerequisites
for admission to the profession, and professional education program requirements promoted by
the CICA remain unchanged. All CA students will write the same Uniform Evaluation (UFE),
which will continue to be the same rigorous exam as in the past. The practical experience
requirement takes 3 years to complete and requires set development assignments through
departments offering relevant experience that matches the CICA competency requirements.
Qualified CA’s will be provided as mentors to the CA in training and these mentors will be
responsible for over-seeing the CA student’s progress and assisting the CA student with their
reporting to the provincial institute.
