Category Killer - Large Specialty Goods retailers that dominate a particular segment of the Retail
Market (Examples: Best Buy Company Inc., Best Buy, Toys ‘R’ Us Inc .)
Chain Supermarket Store – Company operating two or more stores whose primary business is grocery
retailing and generates annual sales of at least $2,000, 000 (E xamples: Publix, Albertson’s, Safeway,
Single Unit Supermarket – Single-unit operator whose primary business is grocery retailing and
generates at least $1,000,000 in an nual sales (Examples: Stop & Shop Mark et, Palmer’s Supermark et
Inc., Cascade Foods Inc., Abe’s Grocery).
Di scount Department Store – Retail establishment selling a variety of merchandise for less than
conventional pric es. Selling square foot age is generally more than 30,000 square feet and in a one -level
structure. Generally provides centralized check-out service (E xamples: Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Meijer Inc.,
Target Corporation, Sam’s Club).
Chain Drug Store – Company operating two or more drug stores with annual sales of at least $250, 000.

$250,000 (Examples: General Nutrition Inc., Bath & Body Work s, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Crabtree &
Home Furni shings Store – Chain and independent companies that generate at least $10,000,000 in
annual sales from home furnishings (Examples: Pier I, IKEA, Rooms To Go, Haverty Furniture
Department Store – Chain and independent companies primarily selling moderate, better, and designer
merchandise. Typically provides checkout service and customer assistance within eac h department
(Examples: Sears, Dillard’s Inc., Robinsons-May/ Meier & Frank , Burdines, The May Department Stores
High Volume Independent Restaurant – Full-service, single-unit restaurant operator that has at least
$1,000,000 in annual sales (Examples: Charlie’s Bar & Grill, Big Rock Chop House, Waldo’s Pizza, The
Great Greek ).
General Merchandise/Dollar Store – Retail establishment selling a variety of merchandise at greatly
reduced price points including single-priced products (e.g. $1). Selling square footage is generally less
than 30,000 square feet. Companies must operate 100 stores or more to be included in this database
(Examples: 99 Cents Only Stores, Dollar General Corp., Family Dollar Stores Inc., Big Lots Inc.).
Home Depot/Lowe’s/Menard’s/Sherwin-Williams Store – The three top home center
warehouse/hardware chains as ranked by total sales. Sell wood products, and a range of hardware,
household and home furnishings items.
Di scount Apparel Store – Company primarily selling off-price and budget/popular apparel. Must operate
100 stores or more to be included in this database (E xamples: Marshalls Inc., Charming Shoppes Inc.,
Clothestime Stores Inc., The Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc.).
