pressing [CTRL], click the other two
         labeled cells.

                                                                                                   20

   (6) While all three labeled cells are highlighted,
         select Format>Cells.

   (7) Select the Protection tab.

We want these cells unlocked so students can type their
answers. Be sure the locked box is NOT checked.

   (8) Select the Border tab and click Outline

   (9) Click OK

   (10) While the cells are highlighted, you may want to
give your cells a fill color. Clicking the fill icon on
        the drawing toolbar does this.

                                                                                                    21

Step #4 - Setting Up Teacher Response Cell

   (1) Click on a cell near the “student response”. We
will call this cell the “teacher response”.

   (2) Click on fx (Insert Function) on the Formula Bar.

   (3) Select “IF”.

   (4) Click OK

A new window will open up.

                                                                                                 22

   (5) Click the cell on the worksheet containing the “student response”. This will enter the
cell’s location in the logical test box. Type =”ANSWER”

Note: If the answer is a number,
do not use quotation marks.

   (6) In the Value_if_true box,
         type the response you want
         if the student’s answer is
         correct.

   (7) In the Value_if_false box, type the response you want if the student’s answer is
         incorrect.

   (8) Click OK

If the student gives the correct answer the teacher’s response will be “Good Job!” If the
student gives the wrong answer or the cell is empty, the teacher’s response will be “Sorry,
try again.”

If the cell is empty, we do not want to give a teacher’s response.

   (9) In the Formula Bar, highlight everything except the equal sign.

   (10) On your keyboard, click [CTRL] and [C] at the same time.
This will copy the IF statement to the clipboard.

                                                                                                   23

        [DELETE].

   (12) Click fx

   (13) Click the student response cell on the worksheet. Type = and then click on any
        empty cell.

   (14) In the Value_if_true box
        type a double set of
        quotation marks with no
        space in between. “”

   (15) Click on the Value_if_false box. On your keyboard, click [CTRL] and [V] at the same
time. This will paste the IF statement into the box.

   (16) Click OK.

Step #5 - Checking Student Response Cell

   (1) Type an incorrect answer in the student
response box and note the teacher response.
If needed, be sure to increase the column
width as described on page 3.

   (2) Clear the student response and be sure there is no teacher response.

                                                                                                24

   (1) Select Tools>Options.

         remove the checkmark.

   (4) Click OK

   (5) Check your worksheet to be
sure it looks the way you
         want.

                                                                                                  25

Step #7 - Protecting the Worksheet

The final step is to protect the worksheet. This will also hide the formulas so students
         cannot see answers.

   (1) Click Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet.

         A new Window will open.

A password is not necessary unless
students know how to unprotect a worksheet.

If you use a password, be sure to make
         it something easy to remember.

   (2) Click Select locked cells’ box to remove the
check mark. Only the Select unlocked cells’
         box should be checked.

   (3) Check your worksheet.

   (4) If you need to make corrections, select Tools>Protection>Unprotect Sheet.

                                                                                                  26
