Independence Center's $3.7 million "Rebuilding Lives, Restoring Futures" Capital Campaign received a tremendous Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company
boost in late June with word of a half-million dollar matching challenge commitment from the Danforth Foundation. Vice President, Sue Hutchins, Commerce Bank

was a most welcome surprise. According to Independence Center Executive Director Mike Keller, the challenge could
not have come at a better time. "Senator and Mrs. Danforth, in their roles as honorary campaign co-chairs, had been Armstrong Teasdale LLP
tracking our fundraising progress and saw that the slowing economy had made it more difficult to obtain commitments Past President, Peter S. Kieffer, M.D.,
from area corporations with whom we had no giving history. They thought the campaign needed a boost and asked the Christian Hospital
foundation trustees to make this challenge."

The challenge was made at a point when the campaign was approximately one million dollars short of its goal, DIRECTORS

that amount. The Danforth Foundation's objective in doing so is that the campaign will fully achieve its goal by AXA Advisors, LLC

Hussmann Corporation Donates Two Commercial Refrigerators

Stupp and Newstead Apartments kept it cool this
summer...with special thanks to Hussmann Corporation.

Stupp and Newstead are Independence Center’s two
residential care facilities. Each was in need of a new refrigeration
unit to replace the aging refrigerators in the on-site kitchens.
Hussmann, a global manufacturer of refrigeration and food
merchandising equipment, stepped in to fill this need. The two
refrigerators retail for $16,000, an amazing gift. Jack Rehder, Ted
Scheff, and Jon Michael were key in obtaining this gift. Our special
     thanks goes out to them!

Independence Center Receives Award from Trailnet

Independence Center was recognized with an honorable mention for its work in promoting healthy
environments as part of the Trailnet Active Living Awards.

These awards celebrate individuals and organizations in the St. Louis region who foster increased physical
activity as a means to healthier living. In 2008, Trailnet presented awards in three categories; Healthy
Individuals, Healthy Communities and Healthy Environments.

Independence Center accredited as a Better Business Bureau Charity
In May Independence Center was evaluated on 20 Better Business Bureau standards for accountability
and re-accredited. The BBB developed these 20 standards to assist donors in making giving decisions.
Organizations that comply with these accountability standards have provided documentation that they
                             meet basic standards:
In how they govern their organization
In the ways they spend their money
In the truthfulness of their representations
In their willingness to disclose basic information to the public
A full description of the 20 standards, more information on accredation and a full report on
Independence Center is available online at us.bbb.org. Independence Center is proud to display the

Independence Center Receives HUD Peer Recognition Award
The St. Louis Field Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently recognized
three St. Louis-area nonprofit housing programs as part of its 2008 HUD Recipient Peer Recognition Program, includ-

                                       Gateway Combined Federal Campaign
If you're a federal employee or know a federal employee, there is only one number you need to remember - 75135! This code is used for the
Gateway Combined Federal Campaign, and allows federal employees to designate a percentage from their paycheck as a contribution to
Independence Center. This payroll deduction makes it convenient for donors to give by spreading their contribution across the entire year. Last
year, more than 90% of all CFC funds raised were given through payroll deduction. Payments on payroll deduction pledges begin on the first
     pay period in January.

Independence Center participated in several events this fall related to the Combined Federal Campaign, including a kick-off rally on October 3
at Scott Air Force Base and another on October 8 at the former Abrams Federal Building in downtown St. Louis. Almost 2,000 people attended
     the two rallies!

Independence Center has been chosen
as the Voice of Caring partner for the
month of October, 2008. As a result of this
honor, we will receive recorded radio
advertisements, several commercials read
live by KMOX on-air talent, and a live radio
interview! This opportunity will be used to
spotlight our employment program and
John Beatty, Vice President of Human
Resources for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, will
voice two of the recorded thirty-second
commercials. Independence Center has
several transitional employment (TE)
positions at the hospital and Mr. Beatty has
agreed to endorse the program on our
behalf. Through this partnership with
KMOX, we hope to educate listeners on
how employing members is a win/win for
everyone involved, as we always have
more members eager and ready to work
than positions available. For more
