2008 Profile of Home Buyers & Sellers
   Forty-one percent of recent
   home buyers were first-time
   home buyers.
   The typical first-time home
   buyer was 30 years old, while
   the typical repeat buyer was
   47 years old.
   Twenty percent of recent
   home buyers were single
   females, and 10 percent were
   single males.

  New home purchases were 21
  percent of all recent purchases,
  down slightly from the 23 percent
  of a year ago
  The median price of homes
  purchased was $218,000 in the
  Northeast, $174,500 in the
  Midwest, $185,000 in the South
  and $267,000 in the West.
  When considering a home
  purchase, commuting costs were
  at least somewhat important to
  80 percent of buyers.

  Nearly half - 48 percent - of
  buyers wanted their real
  estate agent to help them find
  the perfect home to purchase
  14 percent wanted the agent’s
  help in negotiating the right
  price
  13 percent wanted help in
  negotiating the actual terms of
  the sale

Slightly over half of home sellers
traded up to a larger and more
expensive home, and slightly more
than one-fifth traded down to a
smaller, less expensive one.
Recent sellers typically sold their
homes for 96 percent of the listing
price; 60 percent reported
reducing the price at least once
84 percent of sellers were assisted
by a real estate agent when they
sold their home.

38 percent of sellers who used a
real estate agent found their
agents through referrals from
friends or family.
90 percent of sellers reported
that their home was listed or
advertised on the internet.
Among recent sellers who used
an agent, 85 percent reported
they would definitely or probably
use that real estate agent again,
or recommend the agent to
others.

Thirty-six percent of sellers
stated that the reputation of the
agent was the most important
factor in choosing which agent to
use.
Twenty-three percent stated that
the agent’s honesty and
trustworthiness was the most
important factor.
Twelve percent of sellers thought
that using an agent who was a
family member was key.
