THEATRE APPRECIATION - SPRING 2005 SPT 2233 Section 302 – MWF 11:00-11:53 AM Ryan Pierini Theatre office: 897-3740 COURSE SYLLABUS http://blackboard.mgccc.cc.ms.us ryan.pierini@mgccc.edu D 106 REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: THEATRE by Robert Cohen, Tickets for Jefferson Davis Theatre Production - purchase these during week of production, ASAP! COURSE OBJECTIVES: It is the goal of this course to familiarize the student with the understanding of the how theatre has evolved into the art form we know today. COURSE STRUCTURE AND EXPECTATIONS: This course is conducted strictly as a survey course with a series of lectures and discussions about the text. The student will be required to attend each class and participate in discussions about assigned reading. The student will be expected to read all assigned readings from the text. The student is required to attend performances of MGCCC Theatre productions. The student is expected to turn in all papers, typed and on time (no exceptions). No late papers will be accepted. Test Days are mandatory! MANDATORY SHOWS: The student is required to attend a performance of the following productions: SHOW PENDING SHOW PENDING February 16 - 20 April 20 - 23 Tickets are available at the Box Office in the Arena Theatre. All shows begin at 8pm. Arrive early and allow 2-3 hours for the performance. There is no excuse for failing to attend these performances. It is expected that for each performance, the student will sign in on class sheet before leaving the theatre. GRADING: There are a total of 100 points possible in this course. Points are distributed as follows: 10pts. 70pts. Participation (attitude/contribution to discussion/Quizzes) Test # 1 Test # 2 Test # 3 Analysis Paper (Due February 4th ) Play must be approved (2) Performance Critiques* by instructor. Final Exam – Comprehensive 20pts. **Performance Critiques are due 2 weeks after you have seen the production. It must be a live production, and must be approved by me before attending.** Grading Scale: see Course Description online at: http://www.mgccc.edu/~jdfinearts/theatre.htm ATTENDANCE POLICY: Absences will only be excused in case of emergency or illness that can be provided with written documentation by the student. Excuses must be tendered on the day the student returns to class. Upon the fourth unexcused absence, the student will be dropped from the course. An unexcused absence on the date of a TEST will result in deduction of 20% from the student’s test grade. There is POSITIVELY NO MAKE-UP work for quizzes missed due to an unexcused absence. Quizzes missed due to an excused absence must be made up in the week following the absence. Late arrival to class will not be tolerated. Tardiness will count as an absence. March 11th is the last day to ―Officially‖ withdraw with a W. ACADEMIC HONESTY: The provisions and procedures regarding academic honesty found in the Mbook will be followed. Students not yet familiar with those provisions should check them immediately. Any evidence of cheating or plagiarism will, at the instructor's discretion, result in a zero on the assignment or dismissal from the class with an "F" as a final grade.
