BYCo Bike tour 2005
Concept
THE IDEA
The BYCo network plans a bike tour for renewable energy on the Åland islands,
on the first two weeks of July 2005. The bike tour will be a summit action after
local renewable energy campaigns in the participating countries. Participating
countries so far are the BYCO member states: Germany, Poland, Lithuania,
Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Furthermore there will be participants
from other environmental organisations in Latvia, Russia and Norway.
COURSE OF EVENTS
Bike camp
Before the beginning of the bike tour itself there will be a big camp near
Mariehamn, the main harbour of Åland.
The camp will be a possibility to share information and knowledge. It will also
be an opportunity to prepare the last things for the bike tour (inform about the
route, preparing ev. transparents).
There will be workshops about renewable energy on Åland and in other
countries. The Participants will present the development of renewable energy in
their home countries. They will also share their experiences of the local
renewable energy campaigns. The camp will also be a possibility to get together
and learn about BYCo. Therefore there will be meetings and cultural activities:
if possible, we want to invite local music groups and/or theatre groups.
Bike tour
During the bike tour we will visit local factories and places where energy is
produced out of renewable energy. In that way we want to see practical
examples of locally produced energy and learn about the pros and cons of it for
a final report.
The bike tour will end up either in a final demonstration or in a final camp. The
final camp could be together with an annual meeting of one of the organisations
(?).
AIMS
EDUCATION
- Campaigning for renewable energy
Through the bike tour we want to promote knowledge about renewable energy
resources and show alternative ways of transport. Following our experience, the
1
way of reporting in the media is mostly fragmental and negatively based. The
Bike tour will give room for a more detailed and completing information about
energy production out of renewable resources. We want to make a constructive
campaign. This Campaign will spread information about the risks of common
energy production for the environment. But it shall also propose make able
alternatives. This will be done through study visits during the bike tour to local
places on Åland where energy is produced out of renewable resources. We will
also prepare leaflets a small newspaper that we can distribute.
Furthermore we will prepare a homepage where background information is
collected.
On these ways we want to spread knowledge about renewable resources
between us, the participants and the local people (tourists, inhabitants).
- Showing alternative means of transport
The bike tour also wants to show alternative ways of transport. Biking is a
”clean” mean of transport. It is silent and produces no exhaust gases. Biking
should be the main way of transport, as well as public means of transport as
ferries and trains.
- Intercultural Learning
This bike tour brings together young people from the different countries. This
event is meant to set intercultural learning into practice. Through workshops we
can learn from each other. On the final camp on Åland the participants can share
their experiences and link for future actions. Linking action and learning we try
to create a sustainable effect.
COOPERATION/NETWORKING
The bike tour will be a possibility to strengthen the cooperation within the
BYCo network. This will allow us to unit common forces for the future,
working together against environmental destruction and for spreading education.
The common project is also a possibility to spread the knowledge of BYCo
through leaflets and info activities.
People from the BYCo member organisations as well as people from other
environmental organisations will participate in the bike tour and preparational
meetings. Everybody is welcomed to participate in the preparation of the bike
tour.
FUN
2
The bike tour also has a social dimension. We also meet to have fun and meet
people from other countries than ours. This enhances future cooperation -
through friendships within the organisations.
- Why Åland islands
The Åland islands show very well how renewable energy can be produced
locally. There are many households that produce energy out of renewable
resources. Furthermore the Åland islands are situated between Sweden and
Finland, outside of the Eu: this special situation shows our will of integration of
our neighbours outside the EU. The Åland islands are surrounded by water,
wind and sun (Åland having most solar hours): this place is favourites campaign
for water, sun and wind energy.
With this bike tour we would like to show that young people get together to
work for a common purpose. Biking is also symbolical. With biking we want to
show that we move: we are active for our common future. We would like to
show that renewable energy concerns our future and that we are not passive
about it.
WORK SHARING
We have planned several planning meetings before the bike tour (see concept
written by Hristina). In order to make the planning easier we have split into
different working groups.
WORKING GROUPS
- The media group will contact the local medias, working as “public
relation managers”
- The cultural activities group will look for organising events on the bike
camp; they will also look for cultural events on Åland that the bikers
could join;
- The local contact group will search contact to local partners, farms and
local factories where the bikers could stop for study visits and rests.
- The fundraising group is responsible for as well as local funding and
international funding for all the participants
- The homepage group will set up a homepage informing about the route,
the participating organizations and background information. They will
also responsible for updating the homepage
- The research group collects background information about renewable
energy for the homepage and leaflets. The research will also result in an
newspaper for the bike tour
3
- The coordinating group links the different working groups and informs if
information is needed. It consists of a representative of each working
group and the coordinating person.
