Quotation guidelines

(Character count, including spaces and punctuation: 130 – 160 max)

Each banner needs to have a short quotation or statement. Quotations are a key element of the new
design and serve to:

 Foreground the excellent research and teaching that takes place at Birmingham
 Challenge the reader to think further about the course they are applying for or the career they are
         embarking upon
 Provoke thought and open up debat e and discussion
 Encourage those qualities of inquiry and debate which we want to see in our students

The quotations must come from someone associated with the University either now or in the past. This is
because we are foregrounding our academic ancestry and the people who are working at Birmingham today.

The nature of the quotation depends on the nat ure of the application but quotes do need to be int elligent and
arresting. They can be provoc ative, unusual, witty, reveal a different point of view, challenge the reader or
simply express an opinion.

For example, a school web page might have a quote that expresses the aspirati ons for the school or sums
up the culture or atmosphere in that school. A support services department might use a quotation or
statement that underlines the significance of the particular service offered, or highlights Birmingham's
strength in that area – so the Careers Centre might use a quotation from one of our Graduate Employers
outlining the key qualities of Birmingham graduates that make them attractive employees.

Most importantly for use on the web, quotations need to be short. The ideal length of quotations is 130
characters, including spaces and punctuation. The maximum length is 160 characters. Quotations should
also include an attribution – the person’s name, title, school or department and subject area. For quotes
from students, it would be helpful to have their name, year of study, subject of study and award. Before
submitting a quote, you must obtain permission from the pers on who supplied it, preferably in writing.
