Magdalena’s Tea House - April Calendar of Events 2005 2006 E. Michigan Ave. Lansing, 487-1822 4/1 Friday – Teen Mania Drum Circle and Open Mike. Drumming 7pm – Open Mic at 9:30 end with last performer. Sliding Scale, $3 to $10 at the door. 4/2 Saturday – 8pm Jumpin’ Jentoft’s Variety Show. Hosted by Lansing’s own Chris Jentoft. This month features singer/songwriters, skits, a contest, traditional “Irish Music,” an amazing bluegrass session and more. If you haven’t yet caught this unique show, here’s your opportunity for a great night of fun, laughter and exceptional entertainment in the vein of “Prairie Hme Comapnion.” $5 cover 4/3 Sunday – Ladyfest Knitathon, Noon to 5pm. A benefit for Ladyfest, Lansing. Participate in a marathon of knitting fun or another textile craft of your choice. Sign in any time of day. Bring your own supplies and items to donate. Pledge $1 per hour or $12 for the day. 4/4 Monday – 7:30 to 11pm Open Jam. Focusing on sing-a-longs, traditional and original music. Bring an instrument and jump in or relax and listen as we jam. Informal round-robin, group format. $3 to $5 suggested donation 4/5 Tuesday – Film Night. 7pm, French Film Night – Double Feature. Have you been to the Tea House for Film Night, yet? Stop by with your favorite person and enjoy a feature film in our cozy environment with state of the art digital projector and large screen. $3 suggested donation includes a bag of Miko’s specially spiced, fresh, organic popcorn. 4/6 Wednesday – Open Stage Night – 7:30 pm sign up, 8pm start. The stage is open to performers of all kinds, from poets to musicians; thespians to performance artists. $5 cover 4/7 Thursday – 7 to 10 pm Women’s Dark Moon Mysteries School ~ A time for women. A time to release…to relax. Atime to renew and reclaim the Sacrfed Feminine. Topics include: The Goddess, Sexuality, Earth–based Dance, Ritual Form, etc. $5 suggested donation. 4/8 Friday – 8 pm. “The Saltines” and Satchel Jones. “The Saltines” are a Traditional, Country, and Honky-tonk trio, featuring Marin Portier (of the “Ingham County Regulars”) on guitar and vocals, Joe Bakaitis (of “Honest D and the Steel Reserve) on bass and local favorite, Drew Howard on pedal steel. If you’re a fan of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ray Price or Merle Haggard, you’ll enjoy this show. Unique singer/songwriter, Satchel Jones plays Americana, Blues and Originals to open the show. $6 to $10 sliding scale cover. 4/9 Saturday – 8 pm, Jen Sygit and Laura Bates. Two of Lansings’s finest singers and songwriters share the stage for an evening of song swapping, harmonizing and fine picking. Original Folk, Blues and Country and a wide variety of popular songs, old and new. $8 cover 4/10 Sunday – Closed 4/11 Monday – 7 pm, Djembe and Dunum Class. Classes in hand and stick drumming taught by Ryan Edwards of “Like Water Drum and Dance.” Instruction in “Feel,” Technique and Repertoire; exploring the culture, language and history of West Africa. $15 fee 4/12 Tuesday – 8 pm, “Myshkin’s Ruby Warblers” and “Kate Peterson.” Wandering Minstrels from San Francisco, the Warblers feature superb singing and songwriting and masterful musicianship in the Folk Rock genre that roams far and wide across the musical landscape. Myshkin’s lyrics probe the mysteries of personal enlightenment, relationships, social foibles and current politics. Lansing’s own daughter of Orpheus, Kate Peterson, will open. $8 cover 4/13 Wednesday – Open Stage Night – 7:30 pm sign up, 8 pm start. The stage is open to performers of all kinds, from poets to musicians; thespians to performance artists. $5 cover 4/14 Thursday – 8 pm, “Gorilla Smith” and “Acheson.” Two talented, up and coming, original, local bands. Gorilla Smith opens with their version of Punk Rock followed by Acoustic Rock from Luke Shirock and Acheson. $5 4/15 Friday – 8 pm, Three Singer/Songwriters. Dan Vaillancourt, Jon Rajewski and “A Call to Hope” present separate sets of Original songs. $6 cover 4/16 Saturday – 2 pm until late, Magdalena’s presents “LadyFest, Lansing.” We are extremely pleased to be participating in LadyFest. Enjoy an afternoon of music featuring these fine artists. 2 pm – Sarah Cleaver 3 pm – Emily Bate 4 pm –Shelley Miller 5 pm – Sarah Leicher 6 pm – Women’s films as part of LadyFest. 4/17 Sunday – Noon to 6pm, LadyFest closing Party. Musical presentations by more good musicians. Noon – Hattie Danby 1 pm – Rachanee Kitchel 2 pm – Sistrum (women’s choir) 3 pm – Sarah Braseh 4 pm – Jen Sygit 5 pm – Carmen Paradise 4/18 Monday – 7:30 to 11pm Open Jam. Focusing on sing-a-longs, traditional and original music. Bring an instrument and jump in or relax and listen as we jam. Informal round-robin, group format. $3 to $5 suggested donation 4/19 Tuesday – 7 pm, 3rd Tuesdays Short Flix Film Night. Local filmmakers showcase their film shorts. Popcorn and refreshments. Vegetarian Dinner available. $5 ticket 4/20 Wednesday – Open Stage Night – 7:30 pm sign up, 8 pm start. The stage is open to performers of all kinds, from poets to musicians; thespians to performance artists. $5 cover 4/21 Thursday – 8 pm Harvey and Friends. Improvisational Illiterati, Part 2 $5 cover 4/22 Friday – Chris Dorman and a Family of Friends. Local singer/songwriter, Chris Dorman and others play. Ross James will open. 4/23 Saturday – 8 pm Like Water Drum and Dance. If you missed this enthusiastic drum and dance troop at Magdalena’s last fall, be sure and catch them this time. Multiple drums and Dancers performing in various West African styles. $10 4/23 Sunday – CLOSED 4/24 Monday – To Be Announced (Open Jam or Private Party) 4/25 Tuesday – The Magdalena Open Mike Poetry Series. Last Tuesday of every month. 7:30 sign up, 8 pm Readings. Come to read and/or listen to our top quality Word Art Form artists. $5 4/27 Wednesday – Open Stage Night – 7:30 pm sign up, 8 pm start. The stage is open to performers of all kinds, from poets to musicians; thespians to performance artists. $5 cover 4/28 Thursday – Ghettogas John and Medicine Crow. It’s a “Rolling the Odometer” party as Ghettogas John turns 60! Help celebrate and catch some great classic rock Blues and Originals with Medicine Crow and Friends. Time to be announced. $5 cover 4/29 Friday – 8 pm, “Lazy Sunday” and “Sugar Spell.” The Three Ladies of Lazy Sunday work hard to present a set of original songs. Vocal, guitar drums. Sugar Spell presents Folk and Rock with an eclectic dusting of poetry and percussion. $6 to $10 sliding scale cover 4/30 Saturday – 8 pm. Emily Bates, Carmen Paradise and Keith *.
