									                               Government Positions
Many opportunities exist to work in branches of the federal government, as
well as in state and local offices, and all of their agencies. As with most positions,
there are advantages and disadvantages to government work. Many people
receive great satisfaction from working “for the people”. Government Attorneys
tend to get early responsibility over a large part of their work, as compared to
attorneys at large law firms, in part because of budgetary constraints placed on
most government offices. Government lawyers also encounter a lower stress
level. Government attorneys often cite the fact that they do not have to engage in
business development or networking for potential clients as a good reason to
work in government service. Most offices do not require billable hours. In
general, the work hours are not as long as work in a firm. For a comparison of
billing hours go here.

                -Government Practice, General sources-
Government Practice. Government Law Practice includes: practice in any of the
three federal branches of government and their agencies; any state or local
governments and their agencies; and judicial clerkships. Government work
provides many benefits that some believe out-weigh those of private practice--
work-life balance, service, and benefits, for example. Moreover, some students
are unable to acquire a position with a firm immediately and start in government
to learn the skills needed to move on.

The benefits tend to be good in a government position, but the salaries are not as
generous as firm practice. For this reason, many government offices,
organizations, and law schools have established Loan Repayment Assistance
Programs (LRAPs) to encourage graduates to work in government positions to
help pay off their educational loans. INSERT LINK TO C-M LRAP PAGE HERE

For general information on various LRAP’s please visit the American Bar
Association’s LRAP page here.

Some scholarships and competitions are available as funding sources. You need
to check your email for deadline announcements.

Scholarship opportunities through the Federal Circuit Bar Association exist each
year. The awards are for $10,000 each and only one application is needed for all
the scholarships. Deadline is usually in April. Federal Circuit Bar Association

                             -Federal Positions-
Federal opportunities are posted for each job on several websites. About 45% of
federal government jobs exist in Washington, D.C., although other offices exist
around the country. If you are interested in working in a particular office and you
are willing to relocate for a year or so, you will have a better opportunity at
securing the position. Three general websites falling outside the general
framework for federal positions are discussed here.

Office of Personnel Management
The Office of Personnel Management (often referred to as USAJobs) is available
at www.usajobs.com or www.usajobs.gov. Positions available for professionals

JAG Corps
Representatives from the various JAG Corps come on campus to recruit, usually
twice a year. They are interested in answering any questions students may have
about service in their individual units. Visits are made to coincide with the dates
of their beginning classes in the JAG Corps.
