IMPAC Annual Report – 2004-2005 Food Science - Science II Cluster Kara Caldwell-Freeman, Lead Discipline Faculty, CSU Pomona Summary of Identified Issues During the 2004-2005 year, Nutrition and Food Science faculty met for regional IMPAC meetings in Los Angeles on November 13, 2004 and on January 29, 2005, and for the Statewide IMPAC Meeting on April 30, 2005. The following issues were identified: 1. The duplication of articulation efforts by the CSU and CC outside of the IMPAC process. 2. The status of Dietetic Education at both the 2-year and 4-year institutions. 3. Incorporation of the Dietetics transfer pattern into the LDTP requirements. Identified Trends/Future Directions The field of Dietetics continues to grow and job opportunities are abundant in California. Participants felt it is important to retain and support current programs at both the 2- and 4-year institutions. Future directions for dietetic education will be determined by the American Dietetic Association House of Delegates in the near future. The Task Force on Dietetic Education has submitted a report with two major proposals which have an impact on dietetic education programs. One proposal is to move entry-level Dietetics to an advanced level (masters) as opposed to baccalaureate for entry-level to the profession. The second proposal of concern is to eliminate Dietetic Technicians, Registered. At present, these proposals have not been accepted but will be reviewed with decisions made by May, 2005. Educators present were generally opposed to the proposals. Trends identified at Regional and Statewide meetings include the following:   There is an increased interest in culinary arts. This interest needs to be supported through culinary classes for students in food science and nutrition. There is an increased number of Dietetic students entering degree programs, There are more post-baccalaureate students enrolling who want to be dietitians. The students who want a career change are generally older and more mature than native students. There will be a trend toward more on-line courses for students not able to attend class on campus. While Distance Education will be used, hybrid classes may actually produce a better college experience. There will continue to be an increase in learner-centeredness education and development of student learning outcomes to support education.   1 Comments from Statewide Meetings and the General Field Campus representatives found it useful to review the CAN descriptors for Introduction to the Professions, Introduction to Foods, and Nutrition. Introduction to the Professions and Introduction to Foods are two courses often taught at the Community College level and it was fairly easy to revise the CAN descriptors and to develop student learning outcomes. Nutrition at the lower division level is not taught uniformly at the 4-year campuses and it was more difficult to come to consensus. These three courses provide the required major specific courses required by LDTP. The Nutrition/Dietetics transfer pattern distributed in November was established as a statewide pattern rather than a regional pattern. This actually provides a grater opportunity for students to transfer statewide and still be able to graduate in a reasonable amount of time, two to three years. Recommendations for the Discipline  Food Science and Nutrition should continue to participate in IMPAC meetings.  Food Science and Nutrition should be recognized by LDTP as a discipline separate from Family and Consumer Science.  Representatives from Food Science and Nutrition should participate in discussions with Family and Consumer Science and Child Development. Topics for Further Discussion    Continue to review and develop “CAN” descriptors and develop a transfer pattern for Food Science and Culinary Arts to meet the LDTP requirements Review “CAN” descriptors for the remaining FCS labeled courses Discuss the implementation of the ADA Task Force Recommendations Recommendations Forwarded /to be forwarded to: CAN – None at this time.
