The STAA program which began in 1980, is sponsored and managed by the Office of Research and Development. Every year nominations are solicited in a broad number of research categories, from the ORD Laboratories/Centers, Program Offices and Regional Offices. EPA’s Science Advisory Board provides the scientific and technological evaluation of the publications that are submitted. Three levels of recognition are available within each research category, each associated with a monetary award. In addition, a fourth non-cash level award is made for nominations which deserve Honorable Mention. The STAA program is a crucial component of EPA’s efforts to recognize and reward the development of sound science to inform decision making. EPAgenerated scientific publications in the peer-reviewed literature establish the Agency as a key contributor to the scientific and technological literature. The STAA program further enhances the value of the research that has been performed by publicly recognizing, following an independent review, the best of these publications.
