FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Sand Sculptures Sand sculptures are made using only sand and water. They can have almost any shape, size or form. It can be a castle, a human, animal, plant or a fantasy form. Ephemeral in its nature, sand art is seen on beaches all over the world. Sand sculptures are made by using only the natural materials. It is environmentally friendly and does not harm our environment. With sand as a medium you can create large sculptures in a relatively short time. It is a natural human instinct to play with sand. It is the best way to learn three dimensional sculpting with a free and easy medium that everyone can access, young and old. With good sand and a few techniques almost anything is possible, the only restriction is gravity. To see a sand sculpture is very special. A day earlier or a day later the sculpture might not be there. Sand sculpture is for the here and the now. It is transient and temporary, vivid and alive. It can be a very relaxing experience to create something out of sand and water, on the beach. Spending time shaping and carving the sand, slowly the sculpture appears, and for a moment seems to come alive. Sand sculptors only create half of the experience; the other half is created by you, the viewer. Frequently asked questions Is it only water and sand? Yes the sculpture is made of only water and sand. We compact the sand to make a strong structure. When we are completely finished and we want the sculpture to stay up a long time we spray a thin layer of diluted children’s glue on it. This prevents the sculpture from drying out and the details from blowing away. Never use glue on the beach, this can damage the ecological balance. What happens when it rains? Rain does no real harm to the sculpture. The water is absorbed by the sand and will drain away. A bit of rain is good for the sculpture; it means we don’t have to wet it ourselves. In case of heavy rain the surface of the sculpture can erode with a visible pitted texture, but the details can be redone. What happens when it storms? Wind is one of our major problems because the sand will blow away grain by grain. This can be overcome by keeping the sand wet or screening it, compacting it thoroughly and in extreme cases the use of windbreaks. How long can it stand? A well build sculpture that is maintained and protected can stand for months. For indoor sculptures it can be even longer if not touched. The detail of the sculpture can be maintained by spraying diluted glue on it or by keeping the sculpture moist with water vapor. Do you mind that it will be destroyed? No this is an important part of the process. It feels good to look at a sculpture you have just finished and we take pictures. You can enjoy the sculpture for a while and then it’s okay to leave it behind. It allows you to move on. Sand sculpture is an ephemeral and temporary art form and it is great fun. SIZE OF SAND SCULPTURE & LENGTH OF BUILD Size of Sculpture The sculpture can be made any size from 10 ton to 1.000 tons. Ideas of Build Times & Space Requirements Weight of How many How many Days Min floor space Max. We can reproduce most things including logos. Prior to Event or Live Performance We can create the sculpture as a completed form prior to the event or the sculpture can be created as a live performance where people watch how the work is progressing and can ask questions. Sculpting as a live performance will encourage people to come back the next day to check on progress. Length of Sculpture The sculpture can be sprayed with a light layer or organic biodegradable, children’s glue. This will stop the details blowing away and enable to sculpture to remain for the duration of the event. This can be up to 3 months in duration. Site Visit With complicated access or difficult venues we strongly suggest a site visit. Structural Engineer All sculptures due to weight must be on the ground floor. For mezzanine levels, the client may need to instruct a structural engineer to access the floor and weight capacities and allowances. Type of Sand The sand we work with is specific sand for sculpting. This must be sourced by us. Delivery of Sand For sculptures up to 20 tons the client must provide the sand and cover the costs of the transportation of the sand. Additional costs will be incurred bringing the sand into the venue. In outside events with good access the sand can be dropped unto a sheet of plastic into the desired location. For indoor events with limited access it can take bringing in the sand in 1 ton sand bags on pallets. The client must ensure easy access and help with bringing the sand to the desired location. Protective covering for the floor The weight of the sculpture will not allow the sculpture to be on a plinth unless it is well constructed to hold and spread the weight. The sculpture must sit on the floor. This will sit on a protective plastic sheet to cover the floor. Industrial Cleaners in Offices Industrial cleaners in offices will not affect or disturb the sculpture if they do not touch it. Water We must have good access to water while we work. Preferably a water hose with a spray nozzle that reaches comfortably around the sculpture Lighting For evening events please ensure that we have good lighting in which to work. And we suggest lighting up the sculpture with spot lights for an atmospheric effect. Extra lights can be inserted within the sculpture; these lights will have to be provided while we build so we can incorporate these in the sculpture. Protection of the sculpture To protect the sculpture from touching and vandalism at least a rope or fence should be put around the sculpture to avoid the public coming in and damaging the art work We suggest in unsupervised places a security guard especially at night. Security The client is responsible for the security of the sand sculpture and attempts of vandalism. Removal of Sand The client is responsible for removal of the sand sculpture Flights and Accommodation We work all over the world. We are based between the UK, Belgium and India but are often working overseas. Flights from Holland or the United Kingdom may be liable. Because we bring tools and forms we need to bring 20kg check in luggage and 2 bags each. Accommodation is charged per night we are working including the night before we begin work. We are a couple and require a double non smoking room. For additional sculptors we request one room per sculptor. Food & Smoke Free Environment The client must pay per diems for each sculptor for each day we are working. We are both vegetarian. Remy suffers from Asthma and we will not be able to work in a smoky environment. International Events We work with light weight plastic forms, so can travel easily, enabling us to create pieces of up to 3.5m high with a 2.5m base. For larger sculptures we will source the extra material we need locally. Press Our sculptures and workshops always attract the attention of national papers and television channels. All interviews are done on the stand. We are experienced working in front of an audience and working with TV and multimedia companies. We are comfortable talking to and sculpting in front of the general public and cameras. TEAM BUILDING, WORKSHOPS, MASTERCLASSES Workshops We can also provide workshops for children and adults. These are very popular, especially in combination with one of our sand sculptures! Six one hour work shops per day of up to 40 students are possible. We can also provide a ‘walk in workshop’ of up to 5 hours duration. Everybody can just turn up for these within the time we are doing them. We will instruct and inspire every newcomer/family/group to make their own sculpture. In this format we can teach up to 100 people while we walk around from group to group. At the end of the day there will be so many amazing sand sculptures on the beach that it will be an open air sand sculpture exhibition! We will provide all of the tools and equipment needed for the classes. Workshops can have any theme the client requires. Corporate Teambuilding In this sand sculpture teambuilding you will learn from the masters Remy and Paul how to plan, prepare and whilst having fun successfully create your sand sculpture by working together as a team. On a beautiful beach you will learn the secrets of the master sand artists and how to turn common old sand and water into three dimensional sculptures that will surprise your colleague’s family and friends and maybe even yourself. The end result will provide a nice photo opportunity of the whole team showing off their sand sculpture! General information Paul and Remy will be there throughout the whole day to inform, assist and hopefully inspire. Participants should have plenty of drinking water and be properly dressed for a beach environment (hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) All that we bring to the beach should leave with us that include rubbish. No alcohol or smoking during the teambuilding. Tools: We can bring with us all the carving and finishing tools and drawing materials required for up to 180 participants, We will need to hire/purchase some tools locally. Per team of up to 12 people we need: 2 shovels, 3 plastic buckets, 1 plastic watering can, 1 rake. If we have to secure the above tools we will need to arrive one or two days earlier. Optional: Evening/morning before: Introduction into the world of sand sculpture Remy and Paul, master sand sculpture artists, will take you on a multimedia visual journey into the fascinating world of the Master Sand sculptors. From the giant theme parks in China, and Belgium, International master sand sculpture competitions in Canada, America and Holland. Corporate sand sculptures in Royal shows and much, much more.
