					                                      Rigor and Relevance Tuning Protocol



Goal: Improve the Rigor and Relevance of particular assignments used by teachers.

Overview: Teachers often create their own assignments or adapt assignments to fit their needs. This
exercise examines the rigor of the assignments. It also identifies whether or not the desired outcomes
align with the desired objectives of the assignment. Together teachers can work to make assignments
more rigorous and better fit student objectives. Several teachers display to their peers pieces of
student work along with the student objectives to be met from completing the assignment. Peer
teachers will offer feedback to help improve the rigor of these assignments.

Procedures:

   1. Each teacher brings a sample of assignment or lesson to be taught in the near future.

   2. Each teacher will use the Assignment Rating section of the protocol form to rate their
      assignment of rigor and relevance. After determining what quadrant the assignment belongs in
      and the rating numbers, the teacher should state the objectives and desired outcomes of the
      assignment.

   3. In small groups, teachers will examine each other’s assignments and offer suggestions on ways
      to improve the assignments rigor and relevance. Teachers may also suggest ways to have
      students better meet the desired objectives.

   4. After everyone has made suggestions, the conversation will be opened up to what methods can
      make all of our assignments more rigorous.

   5. Each group reflects and summarizes the key points of the process.
