the basics: New technologies, mean new ways of working and new ways of thinking. Understanding technology, makes it easier to make technology work for you. There is one no right or wrong way to use new technologies. What’s best, is what works for you. technology sometimes moves that fast its hard to see what’s happening Where its going: There is a move away from the desktop towards the browser based technologies. The emphasis is on collaboration. Working together, and sharing what we know to make something better. Users are becoming more and more web savy. Communities are no longer contrained by geography. Use of wireless, blue tooth and mobile internet are making internet an always on technology. web 2.0 It’s about the change from monologue to dialogue. It’s about small loosely connected parts. It’s about getting closer and creating communities. It’s about collaboration and harnessing the power of knowledge. It’s about being agile and responding to change. It’s about learning fast. what its all about The value is in the content and how you use it. Not in the technology itself. User involvement embellishes content. Users can participate and produce their own content, or add to others, not just passively sit back and watch the web go by. Tagging gives content meaning. Making it easier to identify, classify, manipulate share and recycle. Users should be able to choose what they get, how they get it, when they get it and where they get it. the principles XML & CSS xtensible mark up language and cascading style sheets are technologies that define the way that a webpage appears in the browser, they can be applied to content imported from other external sources on the internet. RSS Really simple syndication, is a simple way to publish information, that can be easily incorporated into other website, read by aggregators or delivered to your email/web browsers to keep you up to date. Microformats A web-based data formatting approach that tries to re-use existing content as metadata, using only XHTML & HTML classes and attributes to allow data intended for end-users to be automatically processed by software. the technologies Widget A third party item that can be embedded in a web page, often in the form of a dash board item. Sometimes used on social networking and feed aggregator sites to allow external developers to add functionality to the site. Wikis Website or piece of software that allows users to easily create, edit and link web pages via a browser. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and power community portals. Open ID The ability to use a single established identity’s username and password to access your account on other websites, easing the need to remember and manage multiple accounts and identities on numerous different websites. the technologies Clusty Netvibes the applications the dangers of web 2.0 Not everything you read on the internet is true. - its difficult to distinguish between expert advice and complete nonsense. It can be difficult to find the right information. - there is so much data that it can be hard to find the data you want. It can be difficult to get your message heard. - there is a lot of competition out there and your message may be lost. Once you publish content it can difficult to control. - there have been many cases of people being unable to have accounts deleted or it taking very long times. You have to be very careful of liability and copyright law. - if someone posts a libellous comment on your blog you may be responsible. it’s not about searching it’s about finding! To get the best results from a search be as specific as possible. Use “” to find a specific phrase. Eg. shoe pastry will return articles referring to shoe pastry and articles referring to either shoes or pastries. “shoe pastry” will only return articles relating to shoe pastry. Use AND, OR and NOT to further define your search. Eg. Paris NOT france AND art OR design, should bring articles that are on art or design from places other than france (eg paris texas art festival or design show) Use SITE: to limit your search to specific websites or inURL: to limit it to site with the term in the url. Eg. Site:co.uk travel would find travel sites with only .co.uk urls.
