Job title          Project Manager

Department         Information Technology

Reporting to       Senior Project Manager

Purpose of job

To manage IT projects:
     predominantly applications oriented
     package implementation, development & systems integration
     limited infrastructure roll-out/ change
     web & back-office systems
     system selection as well as ongoing enhancements
     large change management projects as well as participation in management of the
     wider IT project portfolio

To liaise with users and external partners of the foundation to understand requirements and
to frame solutions to address those which are appropriate in terms of function, cost,
timescale and benefits.

To promote the effective use of systems.

To manage development suppliers and package vendors in terms of:
     Support and development delivery
     Contract, procurement, acceptance, invoicing

To ensure that development activities are completed within agreed budgetary limits (project,
department and Foundation levels).

To assist in detailed systems design, coding, testing, implementation and support work when

To participate in user liaison and project management meetings as appropriate to both
control delivery of existing projects and to help map out future development plans.

To assist in defining documenting and promoting the Foundation’s Applications Strategy and
Systems architecture.

To assist manage, mentor and develop staff in the IT Department in effective project

To assist in other activities of the IT Department as appropriate.

      provide metrics
      document requirements
      support contract & supplier management

The foundation currently develops systems using the following tools/ architecture:
      Microsoft .Net
      Microsoft Access
      Microsoft SQL/ SQL Server 2005/2008
      Microsoft Sharepoint
      Microsoft Infopath
      Adobe/ Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver

This is supported on a platform comprising:
       Microsoft Windows 2003/2007 Server, Windows XP and Office 2007

The foundation uses these tools to support and enhance the following:
      An extensive external web site ( with rich content and increasing
      levels of applications functionality
      An intranet (Heartnet) based MS Sharepoint which is to be used for document
      sharing, collaboration and process automation
      A variety of extranets to support remote workers, supporters and those involved in the
      foundations medical and research activities
      A variety of core fundraising, administration, support and accounting systems

The foundation additionally utilises and develops applications and interfaces to a number of
packaged systems including:
      MS CRM/ GP/ Dynamics
      BlackBaud Enterprise CRM
      Dataflow 32

Foundation development staff are based in the central London Head Office but systems are
additionally used by home-workers and staff in regional offices. A helpdesk team manages
first line support but developers are additionally involved in support working directly or
through remote support facilities. Staff may also be required to attend regional offices and
home-worker locations on occasion for support and project purposes. The bulk of work is
conducted during normal office hours but some planned and unplanned out-of-hours work
including call-out is also required to resolve urgent support calls or to work on critical

                Person specification

      Proven track record of successful delivery of IT projects
      Experience of roles in Systems Development prior to Project Management role
      (Developer, Analyst, Analyst Programmer)
      Experience of packaged systems selection, implementation and enhancement
      Experience of bespoke systems development

Knowledge, training & qualifications

      Business and/ or Computing Degree preferred
      Demonstrable hands on project management ability preferred over formal Project
      Management qualifications
      Project Management qualifications in PRINCE2 or other methodology an advantage.
      Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Development Architectures and Technologies
      Specific knowledge of MS Sharepoint, Biztalk, Infopath, Dynamics, SQL preferred
