sheet with the above information filled-in. Be sure to give them adequate time so that
Sharon Chambers-Gordon will receive their letters by noon on the October 1, 2009
deadline.
To Reference: This student is applying for nomination by the University of Puget
Sound for a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. The Fellowship would enable him or her
to devote an initial postgraduate year to independent study and travel abroad. The
Fellowship seeks students of unusual creative and/or leadership promise. Your
estimate of the candidate, including your comments on the candidate's character,
intellect and integrity, would be appreciated. Also, your candid assessment of the
candidate's proposed project and of his or her capacity to undertake it with
independence, cultural sensitivity and resourcefulness would be helpful.
Please do not send a "standard" letter of reference that you would write if this student
were applying for employment, another fellowship, or admission to graduate school.
Please do send one or two paragraphs that frankly evaluates the student and the
project that he or she proposes.
You may send you letter via email to watsonfellowship@ups.edu (this is preferred)
or via mail or fax as indicated below. All letters are strictly confidential.
If this student is nominated for the Watson Fellowship you will be asked to write a
more complete letter of reference for use in the final selection process. Thank you for
your help.
Letters must be received by Noon on Thursday, October 1, 2009
