Professional Development Training For Adult Education 2004-2005
It is widely known that the demands of adult life in America have changed significantly in the last twenty years. The amount and complexity of information increases daily. Because of this, standards and expectations of our adult educational programs must continually be reviewed and updated. Educators, especially those concerned with curriculum issues, must often revisit the following question: What do adults need to know and be able to do in order to carry out their roles and responsibilities as workers, parents, family members, citizens and community members? In order to maximize effectiveness of adult education classes, adult educators must participate in professional development activities that reflect the educational needs of our adult students. Characteristic needs of an adult learner may include skills in the workplace, skills for parents and family members and skills for citizens and community members. Historically, professional development has centered on expert-directed, single session workshops. Today, professional development provides high-quality, sustained, rigorous training for educators with the goal of increasing student growth and achievement. George M. Sparks (1983) has categorized professional development into three processes: Context, Process, and Content. Context addresses the organization, system, and culture in which the learning will take place. Process refers to the “how” of staff development. Content refers to the “what” of staff development. Content, Process and Context are all necessary components for effective professional development. If one component is ignored, the results will be far less effective. Professional development is a vital part of our responsibility as teachers of adults, as we acquaint them with the benefits of an education. It is of utmost importance that we empower our adult learners by providing them with the skills necessary to be responsible parents, productive members of their families and productive members of society. For FY 2004-2005, professional development workshops will focus on mathematics, science, language arts, and technology. Workshop topics were chosen from participant comments and suggestions. Topics will include NRS training, learners with special needs, study circles, hands-on science, instructional strategies across the curriculum, and technology integrated curriculum strategies. All workshops will be highly interactive.

Mindmapping
Workshop Description We try to store information in our memory in an unnatural way. A technique called mindmapping activates the long-neglected right side of the brain – while at the same time utilizing the powers of the left side. Participants will hear how the brain works naturally, learn the technique of mindmapping, and prepare a lesson to introduce mindmapping to students. This workshop includes a packet of materials for mindmapping.
