Role and key accountabilities
Work environment

Medicare Australia is conducting a joint selection process for Media Officer positions in Medicare
Australia and the Department of Human Services.

Medicare Australia’s media and communications functions are run as part of a broader coordinated
team operating from the Department of Human Services. Together the Portfolio Department and
the Portfolio agencies work to improve the development, delivery and co-ordination of social and
health-related services to all Australians.

The media section is a highly pressured environment where timeliness and accuracy are vital, and
flexibility is expected in terms of both tasks and hours of duty.

Successful applicants will work in the Department of Human Services Media and Communications
Branch and will be working on either Medicare Australia or Department of Human Services
portfolio media activities.

Role
The Media Officer’s role is crucial to the effective management of the Department of Human
Services portfolio wide engagement with the media. You will be part of a team responding to and
engaging with journalists and media organisations. You will also contribute to the broader
communications activities of the portfolio.

Key accountabilities
1.      Monitoring and analysing media reportage and managing any issues arising
2.      Fielding and responding to inquiries from national, regional and specialist media
3.      Work closely with business areas in order to craft responses to media inquiries in a timely
        and effective manner
4.      Identifying and developing media opportunities to promote Medicare Australia and the
        Department of Human Services
5.      Supporting the Minister’s office, the organisation’s Executive and spokespersons in their
        dealings with the media
6.      Work with counterparts in relevant agencies on cross-marketing and promotional activities

Desirable skills/qualifications
   Experience dealing regularly with journalists and media organisations including a sound
    knowledge of Australian media operations and protocols.

Mandatory skills/qualifications

   Degree or diploma from recognised tertiary institution, preferably in communications or a
    related discipline OR significant experience in a key media/communications role.

Conditions of employment
The remuneration and conditions of employment will be determined in accordance with either Medicare
Australia's Collective Agreement or the Department of Human Services’ Collective Agreement

These positions are ongoing and will be offered to the successful candidate on a full time basis. An order of
merit will be established and may be drawn on for future vacancies in both Medicare Australia and
Department of Human Services.

New Australian Public Service (APS) employees will be subject to a character clearance, health assessment
and probationary period.

As part of its commitment to providing greater customer access, Medicare Australia has flexible working
hours that may include evening and Saturday duty in some work areas. Accordingly, candidates are strongly
