                           MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the PVUSD Energy Conservation Committee is to promote energy conservation
awareness by providing strategies that reduce utility costs and empower students and staff to take
ownership in reducing carbon emissions and saving valuable district funds, while modeling energy
conservation habits for future generations.

                                  Energy Saving Strategies
Appliances

   1. No personal appliances (plug in) unless they are needed to support curriculum or health needs.
   2. Appliances in designated common areas (lounge/dept/grade level, etc.) will be allowed if
      desired.
   3. All office/classroom equipment is to be turned off at the end of every work day.

Heating and Cooling

   1. The maximum setting for heating will be 70 degrees; minimum setting for cooling will be 74
      degrees for student occupied areas/times.
   2. The maximum setting for heating will be 68 degrees and the minimum setting for cooling will
be 76 degrees for office areas and other non-student occupied areas.
   3. When buildings are not occupied, the maximum heat setting will be 50 degrees and minimum
cool setting will be 85 degrees.

Community Ed

   1. Consolidate sites for summer use.
   2. Rental fees will be adjusted to cover utility costs and will have seasonal rates
      (Summer – May-Oct / Winter – Nov-Apr).
   3. Outdoor facility rental rates will be adjusted to cover utility and other related costs.
Lighting
   1. Notify all schools and vendors to turn off vending machine lights.
   2. Reduce emergency lighting to one per room by exits (within code). Reduce any other lighting
      in non-instructional areas when possible.
   3. Recommend solar tubes/skylights when funding is available.
   4. Educate students and staff to turn lights off in classrooms and restrooms when not in use, and
      post signs as a reminder.
   5. Require CFL’s on all lamps.
   6. Coordinate evening cleaning to reduce lighting. Investigate alternative lighting (portable
      lighting) for night cleaning.
   7. No lighting on tennis courts for community use.

Recycling

   1. Encourage schools to implement a recycle program to reduce the cost of waste pick up.
   2. District officials will explore options of recycle contractors for optimum payback, and explore
      corporate partnerships.

School Athletics / After School Activities
   1. Practices/rehearsals should be completed by 9:00 pm, and special events that require use
beyond 9:00 pm must be scheduled in advance with Community Ed.
   2. Schools will schedule activities with minimal utility consumption in mind.
   3. Lights will be turned off when facilities are not in use.

School Incentives

   1. Energy conservation efforts made by individual sites will be recognized in the Tally Sheet,
      newsletters and at Board Meetings.
Technology
  1. All computers will be programmed to sleep after 10 minutes.
  2. Student desktop computers will be programmed to turn off on Fridays or extended breaks.
  3. Turn off all printers and copiers at the end of each day.
  4. All projectors will be turned off when they are not being used.
  5. Technology staff will monitor use when new equipment is introduced and make
recommendations for strategy changes as needed.

Water

  1. Grass will be watered to meet minimal need for growth. Sprinkler systems will be inspected
regularly and staff will be educated on reporting procedures.
  2. New grants allocated for gardens must include costs for watering beyond the life of the grant
and must be drought tolerant and promote water conservation. Schools with existing gardens
will be asked to look at future plans to offset watering costs.
  3. Any new plants purchased for district sites will be desert plants.
  4. High schools will be allowed to over seed fields (varsity baseball and softball fields only) but,
when appropriate, the district may ask booster clubs to help supplement the cost of water and
     seed.
  5. Regularly inspect drinking fountains and all other fixtures and repair as needed.
  6. Create a Student Advisory Group to campaign for water awareness and serve as a
communication link between students and administrators.
