					Skin Basics
The skin’s structure and parts
The skin is made up of three components: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The
epidermis consists of four layers and is regenerated in about a 28-day cycle. Every day,
our skin is undergoing the normal process of sloughing older skin cells. In place of these
dead cells, newer cells have traveled up through the layers of skin. These new cells will
replace the dead cells, this is called turnover. As we get older the time required for the
older cells to slough off increases, meaning the older cells stay in place longer causing
our skin to look dull and aged.
The outermost layer of the epidermis called the stratum corneum, consisting of the NMF
(Natural Moisturizing Factor) and a sebaceous film, covers the epidermis and prevents
moisture from evaporating. The dermis is the main component of the skin and consists of
collagen and elastin, which maintains the firmness and elasticity of skin, as well as
hyaluronic acid and water.
Collagen is the main material of collagen fiber that maintains the firmness of skin. Elastin
is the main material of elastic fiber that keeps the skin elastic. Hyaluronic acid is a jelly-
like substance that fills gaps between collagen and elastin. As we age the collagen breaks
down and the elastin fibers loose their elasticity.

So what can you do to bring a brighter and youthful appearance to your skin?
Chemical exfoliation (peels) and /or Mechanical exfoliation (microdermabrasion) are two
options. Both can be used to treat aging skin, hyperpigmentation (age spots), fine lines
and wrinkles, acne and superficial acne scarring. More than one treatment is necessary to
provide the results that most people want. The fall and winter months are the best time to
get these treatments because they both make the skin sensitive and prone to burning if
exposed to the sun.
Laser therapy is another treatment method and is effective for skin tightening, treat ing
fine to moderate lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (age spots), acne scarring and
also decreases pore size.
We use the GentleYag laser which effectively treats all skin types and uses a cooling
system for maximum patient comfort and safety. Laser treatments take from 30-60
minutes depending on the area of the body being treated and is thus called the “lunch-
time face- lift. The GentleYag also is used for hair reduction and to treat spider veins.
