CITY OF VANCOUVER IRRIGATION SPECIALIST DEFINITION To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, design and installation of parks and landscape irrigation and sprinkler systems. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or lead maintenance worker. Exercises functional and technical supervision to lower level technical staff. ESSENTIAL AND OTHER FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Examples of Essential Functions: Supervise the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems for the City including the modification and repair of sprinkler systems using plastic or galvanized pipe; repair or replace sprinkler heads, valves, controllers, and other sprinkler-related equipment or devices. Maintain and repair ornamental fountains. Remove and replace damaged pipe; cement plastic pipe; cut and thread galvanized pipe. Operate equipment used to install and repair irrigation systems including trenchers, backhoes, and sod cutters. Perform winterizing maintenance in parks, gardens, and City owned facilities. Maintain hydraulic and electronic controls; maintain, install, and program computerized control and weather systems. Clean and dig ditches and underground irrigation lines; locate and remove blockages in lines to allow flow of irrigation water. Set and check electronic water controllers for correct time and correct watering periods; reset control timers as needed. Locate main and lateral irrigation lines and electrical wiring for contractors, utilities, and the public.

Respond to emergency calls for irrigation system repairs. Determine appropriate methods, sequences, and layout of work detail. Collect and input data into a computer; maintain records of system changes; update blueprints; generate reports. Examples of Other Functions: Requisition various supplies and materials as needed. Deal courteously and tactfully with the public in response to inquiries and complaints. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installing and maintaining a variety of sprinkler systems. Basic hydraulic and electrical systems pertaining to irrigation systems. Watering requirements for lawns, trees, plants, and various types of soil. Safe work practices. Interpret diagrams, plans, and blueprints. Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and under unfavorable weather conditions. Design and install irrigation systems for park and landscape areas. Ability to: Deal tactfully with the public. Lift heavy objects.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Equivalent to two years as a grounds-keeper or related experience including at least one year of experience in the installation and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a class “A” commercial driver’s license within three months of hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Backflow Assembly Tester certification within six months of hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a flagging card within six months of hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a forklift certification within six months of hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR/First Aid card within three months of hire. Special Requirements Successfully pass a city-paid medical evaluation.
