CLASS SPECIFICATION FIRE DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE WORKER SALARY RANGE FLSA STATUS REVISED POSITION DESCRIPTION Function: Under immediate or general supervision, performs a variety of basic building maintenance, janitorial or groundskeeping duties for Fire Department buildings and grounds. Essential Function: The information contained in this classification specification is a representative sample of essential and other functions performed in this classification. Specific essential functions are identified for position recruitment or other administrative procedures. Examples of Duties: The Fire Department Maintenance Worker is responsible for basic, general janitorial cleaning, building maintenance and groundskeeping of Fire Department buildings and grounds. Job duties include: clean restrooms; clean and maintain a variety of floor surfaces by sweeping, vacuuming, polishing or mopping; dust/polish building furniture; clean and sanitize exercise equipment; wash windows inside and outside; basic building maintenance and repair; fill dispensers and maintain necessary supplies; mow and edge lawns; weed landscaped areas; apply fertilizers and other grounds maintenance substances; prune trees; plant or transplant ornamental plantings as necessary; pick up litter; remove large patches of weeds or brush; perform winter maintenance of walks and driveways. Perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment or buildings such as garage door lubrication, changing oil or replacing washers. Contacts: The Fire Department Maintenance Worker has daily contact with non-uniformed employees, firefighters and fire officers. Due to the public nature of fire stations, the employee may have contact with the general public and is responsible to respond in a manner consistent with the City's service standards. Contacts are for the purpose of responding to questions or referring the citizen to the appropriate person for assistance. Supervision: None Accountability: The Fire Department Maintenance Worker is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather. Employees are required to perform physical labor associated with groundskeeping and janitorial work for the entire work day. The position duties require finger dexterity, lifting, walking, climbing ladders, ascending/descending stairs, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing and other related physical movements necessary to perform the duties. Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals is routine and ability to read cautionary labels is necessary. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of basic building maintenance techniques. Knowledge of basic groundskeeping methods and equipment. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities, Continued: Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time, in all types of weather conditions. Ability to select and use appropriate equipment and tools for assigned tasks. Ability to operate a variety of small manual/power tools and equipment, i.e. lawn mower, edger, fertilizer applicator, floor maintenance equipment. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturer's use and care manuals. Ability to work as a member of a service-oriented team. Ability to respond to citizen inquiries in a manner consistent with the City's standards for customer service. Experience/Education: One year general building maintenance, custodial or groundskeeping experience preferred. Special Requirements: A valid Washington State Driver's License is required at time of appointment; a Commercial Driver's License may be required. Ability to obtain specialty certifications (such as Pesticide Applicators card) may be required as a condition of continued employment.
