POSITION DESCRIPTION Function: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of entry-level technical civil engineering work and other general tasks in support of engineering programs. Essential Function: The information contained in this classification specification is a representative sample of essential and other functions performed in this classification. Specific essential functions are identified for position recruitment or other administrative procedures. Series Designation: Engineering Technician I (ETI)is the entry training level of the Engineering Technician series which consists of Engineering Technician I and Engineering Technician II. Positions in the Engineering Technician I class are distinguished from positions assigned to the Engineering Technician II class by the nature of the duties assigned and level of supervision provided. Tasks are generally of a routine nature. Operating procedures are clear and technical information is straight forward and easily accessible without extensive research or prior knowledge. Close supervision is provided and work is regularly checked. Examples of Duties: (Duties will vary by assignment.) Duties are performed in a training capacity under close supervision. Prepare rough and final drawings for street, sidewalk, water, sewer, and other public works and utility projects. Research engineering or traffic information of a routine nature. Obtain or prepare simple charts, maps or other data of a non-technical nature. Assist in securing legal data for right-of-way acquisitions. Prepare maps showing easements. Operate a blueprint machine. Respond to citizens' questions and complaints by phone at a public information counter or in writing. Perform document or file searches, or other information gathering and evaluation. Prepare maps from survey field data. Assist in the inspection of public works construction projects. May work in the field as a member of a survey crew. Contacts: Engineering Technician I have primary contacts with other Section/Division staff to share technical information and coordinate work assignments. Supervision: None Accountability: The employee is accountable for learning and gaining skill in the practices, procedures, and techniques of the assigned function, for the timely completion of assigned tasks, and for the quality and accuracy of the work performed. Working Conditions: Working conditions will vary with assigned tasks and may include work in an office or in the field. Some assignments require field work which may be hazardous due to rough terrain, and proximity to large machinery and structures in various stages of completion. Some work will require the employee to crawl under buildings; use ladders; work in and around ditches, pits, roadways, asphalt and concrete batch plants; around operating heavy equipment; and in/near vehicular traffic. Agility sufficient to remain safe is required. Field work may be completed during inclement weather. Some positions may require extended sitting and close attention to detail in an office where noise and frequent interruptions are common.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of basic mathematics including algebra and trigonometry. Knowledge of basic computer operations. Ability to plot, trace, and sketch maps and plans. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to sustain detailed technical work. Ability to respond in a diplomatic, confident fashion to angry or upset citizens. Ability to communicate technical information both verbally, in writing, and through graphics. Ability to absorb and analyze new technical information rapidly. Ability to research statistical, narrative, and mapping information and to draw and defend conclusions. Ability to work cooperatively with others as a member of a service-oriented team. Experience/Education: One year related experience preferred. AUTOCAD experience preferred in some positions.
