CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON POSITION DESCRIPTION RECREATION SPECIALIST
NATURE OF WORK Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist develops, coordinates, schedules and implements specialized programs for youth/teens, visual arts, senior adult programs and/or other specialized interest areas. Recreation Specialists may direct and be responsible for contractual class instructors, part-time or temporary staff, and/or volunteers. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Program Administration Develop, coordinate, and implement recreation programs in specialized assignment area. Maintain inventory and secure purchase of necessary supplies for program implementation. Develop and make recommendations on recreation program fees. Prepare promotional press releases, flyers, posters, and other related marketing materials. Prepare program and/or facility information for seasonal Recreation Guide brochures. Assist with delivery and distribution of program/facility marketing materials. Conduct program evaluations and/or related customer quality assurance measures as needed. Assess the effectiveness/desirability of new programs in assigned areas. Maintain records and prepare written program reports. Assist in budget preparation and control. Implement necessary precautions to assure general program participant safety. Administer First Aid for minor injuries; follow Department procedures in cases of more severe medical needs. Operate office equipment involved in coordinating and scheduling recreational programs. Attend conferences and workshops as required. Staff Supervision Recruit, plan, schedule and direct the work performance and payment of instructors and part-time or temporary staff. Develop and conduct orientation, on-going training, and updating of safety manuals for new instructors, staff, and volunteers. Facility Operation Set-up and take down rooms for program implementation; provide facility clean-up as needed. Inspect recreation facilities, equipment, and vehicles to assure safe and proper working condition. Operate and demonstrate safe and proper use of equipment and/or vehicles used for recreation programs. Secure community center by closing and locking all interior and exterior windows and doors. Set alarm system if appropriate at end of day’s activities. Customer Service Provide both in-person and telephone customer service. Assist customers with program registration and/or facility reservation requests. Communicate effectively with a wide variety of internal and external customers and community groups. Respond to questions and resolve complaints as authorized. Other Assist the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department staff with special events as needed. Other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS SPECIFIC TO THE ARTS SPECIALIST POSITION: Administers artist studio rental program. Develops and monitors operational procedures for clay studio. Loads and fires electric kilns; maintains electric kilns and kiln furniture.

Provides technical knowledge to contracted staff for gas kiln operation. Mixes glazes and stains. Provides for weekly cleaning and organizing of studios, classrooms, and storage areas. Works with Parks Maintenance Supervisor to maintain Moshier Art Center facility and outdoor grounds. Manages City Hall Artist Gallery program. Assists Moshier student volunteers with biannual pottery sales. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a team environment with participants, citizens, affiliate community agencies, diverse ethnic individuals/groups, staff, and volunteers. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge to maintain safe and clean equipment, facilities, and grounds. Ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures Ability to manage multiple tasks, with attention to detail and with limited direct supervision. Respond effectively to emergency situations and apply First Aid and CPR when necessary. Knowledge of principles and practices to train, supervise, and evaluate part-time or temporary staff and/or volunteers. Ability to work within an assigned budget area. Ability to perform custodial and/or light maintenance duties. Ability to greet the public and co-workers in a friendly manner and clearly convey a willingness to be of service and/or be open to resolving the situation at hand. Clearly explains self or answers when necessary and takes time to ensure message is understood. Closes all contacts courteously and appropriately. Knowledge of Word, Excel, Class, Access, Outlook and other related software programs. Ability to exercise initiative and discretion in confidential matters and to respect confidential matters regarding other employees and councilmembers. Ability to analyze situations effectively and adopt an accurate course of action. Ability to work irregular hours on occasion, including some evenings and weekends. Ability to be helpful; willing to negotiate schedule to accommodate another’s needs; and willing to use both verbal and non-verbal behavior to show an open, accepting attitude. Ability to lift 50 pounds. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS SPECIFIC TO ARTS SPECIALIST POSITION: Proficient knowledge of kilns, firing, and glaze chemistry. Ability to lift 50 pounds required. Work may be on site of special events and activities. Must be able to work irregular hours including some evenings and weekends. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Recreation or related field and three years of recreation program experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities which would allow an individual to perform the duties of the position. Must be 21 years of age or older Current CPR and First Aid certificates required. Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license (or ability to obtain within one month of hire). Ability to successfully pass Washington State Patrol Background Check and ability to obtain public health department food handler’s permit.
