22573 CITY OF ISSAQUAH CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION GARDENER SUMMARY: This position performs skilled maintenance of parks, gardens or other landscaped areas. Must be skilled in the application of pesticides and the ability to plant, transplant, fertilize, irrigate, cultivate and prune trees, shrubs and plants. The Gardener works under the general supervision of the Horticulturist. SCOPE: Reports to: Parks Supervisor Supervises: Seasonal Maintenance Aide(s) Independently performs varied assignments in accordance with specific procedures, and under intermittent supervision. Applies considerable practical knowledge in skill area to resolve unusual and irregular situations. Assumes responsibility for assigned operations in absence of supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Plants, irrigates, cultivates, fertilizes, mulches, and weeds landscapes. • • • • • Trims hedges and stakes and prunes trees. Performs sprinkler system repairs, maintenance and troubleshooting Applies pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides). Designs, plants and maintains flowerbeds. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge Of: • Trees, plants, shrubs and lawns indigenous to Western Washington and their care requirements. • • Gardening methods and tools. Pesticide applications. Ability To: • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Read and understand pesticide-warning labels and mix and apply them in accordance with legal standards in a safe manner. • • • • • • • • • • Repair damaged trees and shrubs by pruning or chemical application. Use hand tools, such as pick, shovel, spade, rake or similar tools and power driven equipment such as hedge trimmers, line trimmers, back pack blower, backpack sprayer, etc. Move soil, mulch or other material from one place to another. Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting. Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds short distances (20 feet or less). Bend or stoop repeatedly over time. Work with chemicals, pesticides, fertilizer, and paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment. Work cooperatively with other city employees and the general public. Work safely and follow normal standard operating procedures. Education and Training: A two-year degree in horticulture or related field and two years of experience in the care and maintenance of trees, plants, shrubs and lawns. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Valid Washington State Public Pesticide Operators License or ability to obtain within six months of date of hire. Valid Washington State Driver’s License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
