A GREEK-ENGLISH LEXICON OF THE SEPTUAGINT
                              MURAOKA T.

This complete lexicon supercedes its two earlier editions (1993; 2002).
                              * The entire Septuagint, including the apocrypha, is covered.
                              * For the books of Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, and Judges the so-called Antiochene edition is fully
covered in addition to the data as found in the standard edition by Rahlfs.
                              * Also fully covered are the two versions of Tobit, Esther, and Daniel.
                              * Based on the critically established Göttingen edition where it is available. If not, Rahlfs’s edition is used.
                              * For close to 60% of a total of 9,550 headwords all the passages occurring in the LXX are either
                              quoted or mentioned.
                              * A fully fledged lexicon, not a glossary merely listing translation equivalents in English.
                              * Senses defined.
                              * Important lexicographical data such as synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic expressions, distinction between
literal and figurative, combinations with prepositions, noun cases, syntagmatic information such as what
kind of direct or indirect objects a given verb takes, what kind of nouns a given adjective is used with,
and much more information abundantly presented and illustrated with quotes, mostly translated.
                              * High-frequency lexemes such as prepositions and conjunctions fully analysed.
                              * Data on contemporary Koine and Jewish Greek including the New Testament taken into account.
                              * Morphological information provided: various tenses of verbs, genitive forms of nouns etc.
                              * Substantive references to the current scientific literature.
An indispensable tool for students of the Septuagint, the New Testament, Hellenistic Judaism, and

                              A GREEK-HEBREW/ARAMAIC TWO-WAY INDEX TO THE
                              SEPTUAGINT
                              MURAOKA T.

Part I of this two-way index for the Septuagint shows which Hebrew/Aramaic word or words corre-
sponds or correspond to a given Greek word in the Septuagint and how many times such an equation
applies. This information was provided to a certain extent in the author’s two earlier editions of the
Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint. In its latest edition covering now the entire Septuagint,
A Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint, this information has been totally deleted, and is presented
                              here in its entirety.
Part II enables scholars to see at a glance what Greek words were used by the Septuagint translators
to translate the Hebrew and Aramaic words occurring in the Old Testament. This is an entirely
revised version of the author’s Hebrew/Aramaic Index to the Septuagint Keyed to the Hatch-Redpath
                              Concordance.
Both parts of this Index are based on an extensive, critical review of the data as presented in the
Hatch-Redpath concordance. Moreover, it incorporates data totally left out of account by Hatch-
Redpath such as the apocryphal book of 1Esdras and includes Dead Sea biblical manuscripts, not only
manuscripts of the canonical books, but also an apocryphal book such as the Aramaic fragments of
Tobit. Furthermore, the Index, just as the author’s Lexicon, took into account data found in the
alternative versions of books such as Daniel, Esther and Tobit, and the so-called Antiochene or Proto-
Lucianic version of the books such as Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles.
The Index would be a valuable instrument for not only Septuagint specialists, but also scholars inter-
ested in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic philology, the textual criticism of the Old Testament, and New
Testament scholars. This is an essential companion volume for users of Hatch-Redpath’s Concordance

                                   VICTORIA T.

Narrative Exegesis and the Question of True and False Prophecy in Jer 26-29 (MT)
                                   OSUJI A.C.

This book takes a point of departure from what the author considers to constitute the important ele-
ments in any exegetical exercise; an interaction of three elements which are the text, the reader and
the interpretive key. The text studied is Jer. 26-29(MT), the interpretive key is the narrative method.
The interaction of the text with the reader, using the narrative method as the hermeneutical key is
aimed at discovering what the text says from a theological point of view. The narrative reading of the
four chapters provides the scriptural basis for asking relevant questions concerning the theological
problem of true and false prophecy which we identify to be the major theological theme in the block
                                   under study.

                                   INFANT MILK OR HARDY NOURISHMENT?
The Bible for Lay People and Theologians in the Early Modern Period
FRANÇOIS W., DEN HOLLANDER A.A. (EDS.)

The Pauline expressions “infant milk” and “hardy nourishment” or “solid food” (cf. 1 Cor 3,2 and
Heb 5,12-14) have frequently been used by the Church fathers, medieval preachers and early mod-
ern writers, to voice the contrasting opinions that the words of Scripture are either simple to
understand for the uneducated laity, or only discernable for professional theologians. Hence, the
present volume considers the place of the Scriptures in both lay spirituality and in theological
thinking. It includes a wide range of articles, dealing with vernacular Bible translations intended
for common people, visual Bible culture, Bible commentaries written by theologically and philo-
logically skilled scholars, and other related topics. The present book will serve as a valuable com-

                                   RÖMER T. (ED.)

A long time rather neglected by biblical scholars, the books of Leviticus and Numbers have recently,
after the breakdown of the traditional documentary models, shifted into the centre of the pentateuchal
research. According to the new consensus the Torah came into existence during the Persian period as
a founding document of nascent Judaism; the books of Leviticus and Numbers contain numerous
texts which reflect the very last stages of the formation of the Pentateuch in the Persian period, reveal-
ing at the same time that an urge was felt for a continuing actualization and interpretation of the
mosaic Law. This volume contains papers about the books of Leviticus and Numbers presented at the
Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense in 2006. The first part gathers essays dealing with general questions
of origin, structure and function of Leviticus and Numbers in the whole of the Pentateuch. The
second part is dedicated to more particular issues of these books, covering the fields of textual criti-
cism, history of redaction, synchronical analysis and reception history. With more than 30 papers

This publication collects the majority of papers presented at the challenging colloquium on
“Repetitions and Variations in the Fourth Gospel” at the K.U.Leuven held from 7 – 9 November
2006 in Leuven. Articles that have been added are a direct result of the colloquium.
The colloquium was planned with this publication in mind, wishing to contribute to an understanding
of the Fourth Gospel’s language and style in relation to the Synoptic Gospels and in manifesting its
unity in theme and language. The contributors mostly represent new approaches to understanding the
composition and nature of the Fourth Gospel. Therefore the historical overview of past research is most
helpful in placing these new approaches.

Martínez is intended for a special present initiated by his Leuven collegae proximi on the occasion of

Like the personality of the celebrated scholar himself, the composition of his Festschrift has become
a most colourful undertaking. After the editor’s presentation of the rich biography and the huge

                                   MARGUERAT D. (ED.)

                                   METAPHORS IN THE PSALMS
VAN HECKE P., LABAHN A. (EDS.)

Understanding the Psalms implies understanding the metaphors they use in bringing to expression the
reflections on God, the world, the enemies, the self. In modern scholarship the study of figurative
language was often neglected in favor of discussions of genre, poetical form or canonical organisation.
The present volume brings the study of metaphorical language back to the heart of Psalm scholarship.
Three areas of investigation are given particular attention in this collection of nineteen contributions,
written by leading scholars in the field: 1. The elucidation of hitherto misunderstood or unrecognized
metaphors; 2. The study of conceptually interrelated clusters of metaphors and 3. The role metaphors
play in poetic and argumentative development of the Psalms.

THE COMPOSITION OF THE BOOK OF PSALMS
                                   ZENGER E. (ED.)

The volume contains the acts of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense on the Composition of the
Book of Psalms that was held in Leuven on 5-7 August 2008. Together the forty-four essays, many
of these by first-rank experts in the field, offer an impressive survey of current research on the Book
of Psalms, which is here primarily studied as a composition in its own right. Several contributors
discuss methodological issues and various theological and redactional aspects of the Book of Psalms as
a whole. Others offer an analysis of larger sections of the Psalter or of a specific Psalm within the
                                   broader perspective of the Book.
Erich Zenger, the President of the Colloquium and editor of the book wrote the opening address
entitled “Von der Psalmenexegese zur Psalterexegese”. He was still fully engaged in correcting the

                                          Oxford Conference, April 2008

This volume contains the acts of the international conference on the Synoptic Problem that was
organised at Lincoln College, Oxford, in April 2008. The conference focused on offering a compre-
hensive assessment of the state of research into the Synoptic Problem over the last hundred years,
indicating potential ways in which the discussion might be advanced. In more than thirty essays
contributors have dealt with various aspects of the question, including the current state of synoptic
studies in general, a comparative assessment of the major synoptic hypotheses, the synoptic gospels
and ancient scribal practices, the role and function of hypothetical sources, the synoptic gospels and
other gospels, and the reception history of the research.
This volume marks the centenary of the publication of the Studies in the Synoptic Problem by

                                           it gives (1) a comparative statistical survey of the occurrences in Luke and Acts, Matthew and Mark;

                                           (3) a comparative list of word groups (based on the concordances of Aland and Hoffmann as well as

The Reception History of Psalm 2 in Early Judaism and the Early Church
                                     JANSE S.

This award-winning study characterizes Psalm 2 as a messianic-theocratic psalm. Early Jewish litera-
ture emphasises the eschatological and sapiential applications of the psalm more than the messianic
interpretation. However, surprisingly, we come across the same text combinations that later emerge
in New Testament literature: Christian scholarship obviously stood in a long tradition.
It is shown how the relevant New Testament texts focus on the messianic interpretation of Psalm 2,
especially of the words: “You are my Son”. In the post-Easter confusion it functions as an argument
to show that the crucified Jesus nevertheless was the Son of God. Luke apologetically explains how in
this psalm the Messiah, identified earlier as the despised king, is also called “My Son” by God himself.
• 2009 – Contributions to Biblical Mark elaborates this idea for catechetical purposes: Jesus already was the Son of God at the time of
Exegesis & Theology 51 his baptism and transfiguration. Finally, Hebrews uses Ps.2 to prove the pre-existence of Jesus.

                                     TUCKETT C.M. (ED.)

This collection of essays, papers originally given at a colloquium in Oxford 2008 involving scholars
from the universities of Oxford, Leiden and Bonn, focuses on the theme of Feasts and Festivals in
Biblical and extra-Biblical traditions. The topics include studies of the festal gathering in Deuteronomy
and funerary rites for children in the Hebrew Bible, feasts in some extra-biblical texts (including 2 and
3 Maccabees), through to treatments of a number of New Testament themes and topics in the gospels
and Paul. The focus on the theme of ‘feast’ brings out new aspects of some well-known texts and sheds
new light on a number of themes in ancient Judaism and in early Christianity. This volume will be
of interest to all those engaged in Biblical studies and its ramifications in the study of Judaism and
                                     early Christianity.

The anthropological quest is still one of the classical approaches in historical-critical as well as in other
methodological approaches to the New Testament. The complexity of anthropological ideas in the
New Testament is seldom presented neither explicitly nor in clearly defined terms, but rather in stories
about human beings or their (inter-)actions and/or parenetic teaching that is based on some, often
unstated, presuppositions of what humans are like. The different essays in Anthropology in the New

THE OLD GREEK OF ISAIAH: ISSUES AND PERSPECTIVES
Papers read at the Conference on the Septuagint of Isaiah, held in Leiden 10-11 April 2008
VAN DER KOOIJ A., VAN DER MEER M.N. (EDS.)

The Old Greek of Isaiah represents an intriguing and complex unity within the Septuagint. The
present volume contains contributions reflecting a variety of issues pertaining to this version, and also
offers perspectives for further research. The topics dealt with can be designated as follows: terminology
and vocabulary, unity of the book, rhetorical figures, coherence on the level of a pericope, theology,
and hermeneutics (fulfilment interpretation). The Greek version is of course compared with the sup-
posed parent text in Hebrew, but several contributions also show a strong interest in the Greek text
as it stands. As to the latter approach the following aspects play an important role: the immediate
context (verse; pericope), style, the meaning and function of words and phrases, and related texts. In

                                     TRANSLATED HALLELUJAHS
A Linguistic and Exegetical Commentary on Select Septuagint Psalms
                                     SMITH J.

This book explores the meaning of five psalms in the Septuagint version (104, 105, 110, 111, 112),
not as interpreted in later reception history but as originally intended by the translator. The author
retraces the translator’s path, accounting for translation choices by comparing the Greek with its
Hebrew source, and measuring the impact of the translator’s decisions upon the profile of the Psalter,
such as the effect of semantic shifts and the extent to which Hebrew poetic features, lexical links and
Pentateuchal intertextuality have been lost or preserved. Chapter 1 establishes a methodological frame-
work in dialogue with past and present scholarship. Since the five Psalms studied in this book all begin
with the word “hallelujah,” chapter 2 is dedicated to the meaning and function of this heading in the

At October 28th, 2008, the University of Vienna awarded Emanuel Tov an honorary doctorate in

fields of Biblical, Jewish, and Christian studies, the University of Vienna decided to accompany the

The present volume publishes proceedings of this symposium and additional contributions. In his
academic memoirs, Emanuel Tov tells his story with the Dead Sea Scrolls and their publication. Lika

AS THE INTRODUCTION TO THE ENTIRE BOOK
                                     WENZEL H.

In light of the widely acknowledged phenomenon that Zechariah refers to previous Scripture, this
thesis demonstrates that these references can significantly contribute to Zechariah’s argument by draw-
ing on Mikhail M. Bakhtin’s insight of the dialogical orientation of words. The dialogical orientation
of Zechariah’s word with regard to previous Scripture and Zechariah’s audience establishes Zech
1:1–6 as the introduction to the entire book. It also develops a theology of transition and of waiting.
Seven case studies demonstrate that the call of Zechariah 1:3-4 sounds through the entire book. The
call to be different from the ancestors in a time of waiting emphasizes the people’s responsibility to
live faithfully within the Sinai covenant. It also points to the prophetic function of the so-called

Leuven (Belgium) is a superbly illuminated manuscript created at the Royal Court of Naples in the
turbulent fourteenth century. At this time much of Central and Southern Europe was governed by
the successful dynasty of Anjou, which continued to expand its territories and encouraged artists and
writers like Giotto, Simone Martini, Boccaccio and Petrarch. In 1328, after the death of her father,

gift, which became known as the Anjou Bible, a manuscript that is priceless from a historical and art-
historical point of view. In addition to Bible texts and splendid miniatures, it contains a wealth of
historical information about the house of Anjou and the book’s origins. One of the artists responsible

                                      DONFRIED K.P. (ED.)

1 Timothy Reconsidered contains the presentations and deliberations of the nineteenth meeting of the
Colloquium Oecumenicum Paulinum, a distinguished group of some thirty-five international and
ecumenical Pauline scholars, held at the Abbey of Saint Paul in Rome during September, 2006.
1 Timothy served as the focal point for all eight papers, although the relationship of this text to that
of 2 Timothy, Titus and to other Pauline writings was repeatedly considered. Extensive dialogue
centered on the methodological issue of pseudonymity and its continued effectiveness as an exegetical
tool. Some urged consideration of a broader view of Pauline letter writing, one that involved author-
ization to, or joint authorship with, co-workers situated in diverse Pauline missionary centers. The
volume also contains a major reassessment of theological themes found in 1 Timothy including the
relationship of grace to such heteronomous norms as asceticism, the so-called accomodationist char-

                                      SCHLOSSER J. (ED.)

                                 AITKEN J.K.

Blessings and curses represent complex social and theological phenomena, and challenge our linguistic
and conceptual understandings of the society in which they are used. This volume gathers together
the semantic information for the words used in ancient Hebrew (including inscriptions, Ben Sira and
Qumran) for the field of ‘blessing and cursing’. Since semantics must take into account the context
in which the words are used, Part 1 surveys different approaches to the understanding of blessing and
cursing in Israelite religion and society, and the anthropological and linguistic approaches taken in
interpreting them. The relevance of these approaches to a semantic study is noted, and a summary of
the second part of the volume is given. Part 2 is a detailed presentation of the data for each word,

                                 KUTY R.J.

The origin and early history of Targum Onqelos to the Pentateuch and Targum Jonathan to the Prophets
have long been the object of lively scholarly discussions. Linguistic arguments have played an important
role in the debate, but the grammatical treatment of the Aramaic of these texts has focussed on phono-
logical, orthographical, morphological and lexical matters, leaving syntactic aspects mostly unconsidered.
Using the corpus of 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel as a basis, this book investigates five key topics in the syntax of
the Aramaic of Targum Jonathan: the use of the states of the noun (determination), the morphosyntax of

                                 LEXEMES
                                 HARTLEY J.E.

Colours play a vital role in the daily lives of all peoples. Truly remarkable is the human ability to see such
a vast array of colours. Just as intriguing is the way languages develop lexemes to reference the colours
that the eye sees. In recent years there have been many investigations into the way that languages add
colour lexemes. This research has shown that languages, as a rule, follow similar definable steps in the
addition of basic colour lexemes. Anthropologists have discovered that in languages of primitive cultures
lexemes for colour play different roles than they do in languages of industrialised societies. Consequently
studies of colour lexemes of such languages need to employ different methods of inquiry into such a
language’s colour vocabulary. Additional insights have been gained through the study of colour lexemes
in ancient languages. This study makes a contribution to the field of the semantics of colour by investi-

and Qumran. In part 1 there is a consideration of the physical phenomenon of colour and a review of

The excavations of the last eighty years, especially at Ugarit, Ebla, and Emar, have accumulated an
exceptional amount of source material referring to the Syro-Canaanite god Resheph, whose history
can now be followed during three thousand years. Chapter I deals with Resheph in the Ebla texts,
already witnessing his assimilation to the Mesopotamian god Nergal, while Chapter II is dedicated to

Mari, Ugarit, Ras Ibn Hani, and Emar, are presented in Chapter III, while Chapter IV concerns the

examined in Chapter V, while Chapters VI and VII deal with the first millennium B.C. and the later

Ma’allanate by Assyriologists, is followed by the up-dated analysis of all the Aramaic texts and

collected and reorganized in four chapters. All the texts dealt with date to ca. 700-620 B.C., from the

contributions from all senior members of the project research group. The contributions are the result
of a research conference in 2006, in which both the question of the nature of truth as such, and the

influence of the Belgian bishops and theologians at the Second Vatican Council. The book is subdi-
vided in three main parts. A first part offers more general studies (both from a historical and a socio-

able to exercize influence on their outcome. The second part contains a number of studies devoted to

In the spring of 2005, almost by chance, the Diary of Johannes Cardinal Willebrands, which depicts
events from the international ecumenical scene on the eve of the Second Vatican Council, was dis-
covered. The Diary consists of three Notebooks that were written during the period 1958-1961.
During this time, Willebrands was also appointed the Secretary of the newly established Secretariat
for Christian Unity (1960). As Cardinal Augustin Bea’s right-hand man, he played an important role

Without a doubt, the late Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009) remains one of the most important and
inspiring theological voices of the twentieth century. Apart from his influential books still widely read,
the name of Schillebeeckx is constantly linked to the renewal of church life and theology that occurred
during the Second Vatican Council. The present critically annotated edition by Dr. Karim Schelkens

“Nostra Aetate” as Ongoing Challenge for Jewish-Christian Dialogue
                                  MOYAERT M., POLLEFEYT D. (EDS.)

The Declaration Nostra Aetate issued by the Second Vatican Council on October 28, 1965, on ‘the
relationship of the Church to non-Christian religions’ marks a revolutionary milestone in the history
of interreligious relations. With this document the Catholic Church sought to establish a new climate
in which encounter and dialogue were understood as part of the Church’s role in the world. As such,
Nostra Aetate expresses the dialogical spirit of the Second Vatican Council. This book is inspired by
the same dialogical spirit of Nostra Aetate, addressing some of the difficult theological challenges that
lie ahead of us. It takes Nostra Aetate as an ongoing challenge to develop new theological reflections
in the dialogical spirit of Vatican II. The contributors in this volume therefore do not only look
to the past, but also critically articulate the challenges and obstacles confronting Jewish-Christian

                                  THE BOOK OF LIFE
                                  Biblical Answers to Existential Questions
                                  AUSLOOS H., LEMMELIJN B.

The search for meaning is at once very old and extremely contemporary. Existential questions about
origins, our destiny, and the purpose of our lives are no less meaningful today than they were in previ-
ous centuries. Since time immemorial, people have tried to find their way in life and to give it meaning.
Do things ‘have’ meaning? Do we ‘give’ them meaning? And how can we live life to the full?
In this book, the authors attempt to provide a few pointers. In the first part, the historical-cultural
evolution from mystery to disenchantment is laid out, particularly with regard to our approach to the
Bible. In the second, possible responses to this disenchantment are described, ranging from reaction-
ary fundamentalism to enrichment through critical approaches. Finally, the third part offers biblical
                                  answers to fundamental existential questions.

The year 2010 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Recherches de Science Religieuse and provides
an opportunity for the journal to explore its past, present, and prospects for the twenty-first century.
In order to celebrate the event, this special commemorative issue calls upon authors from many differ-

taking up the challenge of analyzing the present and reflecting upon the future. In the first section,
diverse approaches – theological, sociological or historical – are applied to an in-depth diagnosis of the
present. The second part is dedicated to memory: the founding years during the modernist crisis and

                                         GIBERT P., THEOBALD C. (EDS.)

Children’s Perspectives in Ethics, Theology and Religious Education
                                         DILLEN A., POLLEFEYT D. (EDS.)

This book deals with themes concerning religious education and the spirituality of children.
Throughout the seventeen chapters, the book stimulates a scholarly discussion about children and
theology. The book makes clear that classical Christian theology can benefit from taking seriously
children’s voices and reflections about children. The volume demonstrates how nuanced and interdis-
ciplinary reflections can be relevant for Christian and social practices of adults with children and how
                                         these practices can influence theology.

                                         NORMATIVITY OF THE FUTURE
Reading Biblical and Other Authorative Texts in an Eschatological Perspective
                                         BIERINGER R., ELSBERND M. (EDS.)

One of the major issues of contemporary theology is the relationship between the past and the present.
Many see the task of theology as the re-interpretation of past traditions for today. This focus pays
scant attention to the future. In recent years theological inquiry into the future and eschatology is
surfacing. In the past ten years we have developed an eschatological hermeneutics for the interpreta-
tion of biblical and other authoritative texts. This hermeneutical approach integrates the past, present
and future dimensions of the interpretive process paying special attention to the future.
The first part of this book consists of three foundational articles by Reimund Bieringer and Mary
Elsbernd about the approach which we have come to call “normativity of the future”. In this part we
provide the theoretical foundations of this eschatological hermeneutics.

                                         BAERT B.

The three chapters of this book plumb the interspaces between the world of texts (word), images
(gaze) and sensation (touch). The choice of the three themes was carefully considered. They provide
an optimal means of testing the strengths and limitations of the most recent interdisciplinary research
in the study of the Bible and the visual medium. Furthermore, they take on exceptional forms at the
intersection of the interspaces. Finally, each of the themes is anchored in a particular biblical phrase,
which sealed its most influential pact between word an image, and gave rise to impressive visual
traditions within Christianity: Do not touch me (John 20:17), Who touched my clothes? (Mark 5:30),

A Christian Commentary of the Dhammapada
                                         LEFEBURE L.D., FELDMEIER P.

The Dhammapada is Buddhism’s most beloved compendium of the Buddha’s sayings. It is memo-

Buddhists. The Path of Wisdom presents this distillation of the Buddha’s wisdom in a fresh translation

Christian monastic and spiritual traditions. In continuity with the long tradition of seeking wisdom

initiated into an illustrious esoteric lineage starting from a prestigious Indian Esoteric patriarch. It is
also believed that Saicho’s Chinese mentor, based on three esoteric texts translated by the Indian

This book subjects this conventional view to a critical examination. It argues that the two “dharma-
transmission documents” were not written by Saicho’s Chinese mentor, but were prepared in Japan
for strengthening the legitimacy of the initiation Saicho received from China. The three siddhi texts
attributed to the Indian patriarch were also composed in Japan as the scriptural support for Saicho’s
esoteric transmission. The Tendai form of Esotericism in the name of Saicho was for the main part

Reconciliation in Interfaith Perspective: Jewish, Christian and Muslim Voices brings together scholars
from Jewish, Christian and Islamic backgrounds to discuss the concept of reconciliation from within
their respective traditions. These scholars focused on whether a common understanding on reconcili-
ation is possible between the Abrahamic religions. In this volume the papers are arranged in two parts.
The first contains generalized studies that approach the topic from a broad perspective. The second
presents specialized studies that focus on specific issues like Islamic normalcy, the relationship between
forgiveness and ethics or a comparison between Eastern and Western Christianity.

                                           IDENTITY AND CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM INTERACTION
Medieval Art of the Syrian Orthodox from the Mosul Area
                                           SNELDERS B.

As elsewhere in the Middle East, the Mosul area witnessed a flourishing of Christian art during the
thirteenth century. Discussing both art-historical and written sources, this book examines the role of
art in expressing the identity of Mosul’s Syrian Orthodox community, and explores the relationship
between Christian and Islamic art. Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle East during the medieval
period have often been seen in terms of conflict and violent opposition, a presumed dichotomy which
focuses almost exclusively on theological differences and fails to take account of the social complexities
of daily life. The present study challenges these simplistic views of division along religious lines, seeing
the boundaries between the Christian and Muslim communities as areas of intermingling rather than

Many aspects of the mystery cult of Mithra remain enigmatic. It was a belief system that touched the
hearts and minds of all manner of people, rich and poor, in the early centuries AD. Secretive, private
and exclusive enclaves of believers infiltrated numerous regions of the Roman Empire, assembling in
caves and cellars, where strange, sometimes terrifying, initiation rites were carried out.
Never before has the evidence for the mysteries of Mithra been traced to the Maltese archipelago. This
group of islands in the central Mediterranean fell under Roman domination, but their somewhat
isolated location may have appealed to followers of Mithra. Cult artefacts and possible places of
Mithraic worship in the islands have been presented here fore the first time.

A Study of the “Plebs” in the Church and Cities of Roman Africa in Late Antiquity
                                        EVERS A.

This book is about people. It is an attempt to make sense of the position of the plebs in the Church
and cities of Roman Africa in Late Antiquity. By looking at the terminology of plebs and populus in
Christian texts, in combination with aspects of the vast amount of archaeological evidence and epig-
raphy from the African provinces of the Roman Empire, Evers seeks to establish a much closer link
between text and context, arguing that the laity in the Early Church had an active role to play. The
writings of Cyprian of Carthage, Optatus of Milevis, and Augustine of Hippo are taken more at face

                                        MONOTHEISM BETWEEN PAGANS AND CHRISTIANS
                                        IN LATE ANTIQUITY
MITCHELL S., VAN NUFFELEN P. (EDS.)

The fourth century was a major religious battleground. The rise of Christianity, and in particular its
dominance from Constantine onwards, marked an important shift in the religious history of the
Mediterranean. Christianity saw this change as the victory of its monotheism over the polytheism of
paganism. This volume studies how similarities between paganism and Christianity were obscured in
the polemic that was waged by Christianity against paganism and in the pagan responses to it. The
volume includes papers on Porphyry, Augustine, Themistius, Latin verse inscriptions, as well as deal-
ing with the different ways in which Christian and pagan thinkers conceived of monotheism.

The Speculum humanae salvationis (Mirror of Human Salvation), a medieval book recounting in forty-
five chapters the story of human redemption within the larger context of the Virgin Mary’s life, was
something of a “best seller” in the Middle Ages, surviving in over 400 copies. Because the author
wrote anonymously, however, little about the book’s initial context is known despite a century’s-long
effort to uncover the author’s identity. Friars, Scribes, and Corpses investigates a Marian confraternal
setting for the Speculum’s emergence, and newly proposes consideration of Nicola da Milano as the

understood aspects of monastic life in the Later Middle Ages. The nuns whose austere lives are cele-
brated in spiritual biographies and autobiographies in the Order of Preachers were long dismissed by
traditional scholars as hysterics or inferior mimics of true mysticism. Some recent feminist studies
either gloss over asceticism or portray its practitioners as traumatized victims of patriarchal oppression.
Traditionalists and progressives seem to agree: extreme asceticism is best understood as pathetic or
even pathological behavior. David Tinsley seeks to temper this view by exploring late-medieval ascet-

BREMMER R.H. JR, DEKKER K. (EDS.)

Throughout the early Middle Ages, education and learning in Western Europe underwent a substan-
tial development, from Italy across the Alps, from Latin to the vernacular and from secular to
(although not exclusively) religious. With Latin as its prime medium, developments in education and
learning were genuinely international and allowed for a steady exchange of teachers and texts across
                                      borders and institutions.
The articles in this second volume of ‘Storehouses of Wholesome Learning’ emanate from the second

A Selection from the Maurits Sabbe Library
                                   BEGHEYN P., DEPREZ B., FAESEN R., KENIS L., PUT E. (EDS.)

This volume deals with books, published in the Low Countries, presently housed in the Maurits Sabbe
Library, K.U.Leuven (Belgium). The seventy book reviews, written by some fifty specialised scholars,
convey an idea of the richness of the Jesuitica collection at this library, which includes the large
Jesuitica collections of the Flemish and Dutch Jesuits, introducing the research community to the
plethora of possibilities for further inquiry. The selection comprises a great variety of topics: organiza-
tion and history of the Society, theology in all its aspects, education, missions, history, geography and
science. Even pamphlets and books in which the Jesuits are the object of slander are dealt with. Not
only provides this book a glimpse of the many local and foreign Jesuits and the contexts in which they

New STUDIA PATRISTICA VOL. XLIV - XLIX
Edited by BAUN J., CAMERON A., EDWARDS M., VINZENT M.

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on
Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis
of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world
and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century
to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small
and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of docu-
ments, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers
put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic
scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

This monograph is a synoptic presentation of the texts of all the recensions of the Syriac Life of
Ephrem. Working from the manuscript sources, the author corrects previously published recensions
of the Life and presents heretofore unpublished recensions. A critical introductory study traces the
Life to its sources among Byzantine ecclesiastical writers who were promoters of the monastic ideal
and who seized upon the reputation of Ephrem in native Syriac tradition to authorize a way of life he

A key figure in late antique Gaul, Sidonius Apollinaris – aristocrat, administrator, poet, letter-writer,

Augustine’s way of speaking about God has been frequently deplored. It has been dismissed as too
confident regarding the content of its assertions and too narrowly confined. The reception of
Augustine’s work appears to indicate that there was not a little truth to this view. Augustine’s affirm-

                                    and spirituality.
The presupposition of this book is that, throughout his life, Augustine maintained a balance between

Central questions discussed during the symposium were: Are the analyses, offered by authors who are

L’INTERPRÉTATION DE LA GNOSE (NH XI, 1)
                                     FUNK W.-P., PAINCHAUD L., THOMASSEN E.

Clementines, which occupy a special place among the early Christian writings, due to their compli-

The majority of chapters focus on various aspects and passages of the Homilies and Recognitions.
In the Homilies we look at philanthropy, the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism, Appion

This volume contains the Acts of the Expert Meeting on the Syriac Renaissance. A Period of Interreligious
and Intercultural Dialogue (Nijmegen, 2-4 June, 2005). The Syriac Renaissance (11th-13th cent.) is a
period which has received relatively little attention as such. Traditionally, the focus of attention has
been on the literary production of individual authors as Barhebraeus or ‘Abdiso’ bar Brikha, without
trying to study them in relation with other contemporary authors or within the context of the general
theological, cultural and artistic orientations of this period. For this reason, the aim of the Expert
Meeting was to complete the picture of this presumed Renaissance by presenting the works of less
known authors, to discuss the works of better known authors, to investigate whether these perspectives

The life and exploits of the Macedonian King Alexander the Great were recorded and passed down
in the legendary biography, known as the Alexander Romance of Pseudo-Callisthenes. During the
Middle Ages the Romance became extremely popular, after its Greek original had been translated and
elaborated in numerous versions and vernaculars. Alexander’s fame spread all over Europe, the
Middle East, Africa and Central and South East Asia.
In this study the focus is on the Arabic tradition. For the first time this field of research has now been
explored in all its details, resulting in a complete survey and classification of this rich tradition. The

This book contains the documentation from the 19th meeting of the European Consortium for
Church and State Research, which was held in Nicosia, Cyprus on 15 – 18 November 2007. The aim
of the conference was to provide an overview of the different legal ways in which the Member States
of the European Union interpret in their domestic legal orders, the provisions of the European
Convention on Human Rights which relate to religious freedom.
The meeting comprised participants from all EU member states. This widespread participation is
mirrored in the contributions of this book. There are national reports from all Member States of the
European Union, except for Belgium and Malta. Each national report contains translated extracts of
the most important national legal decisions concerning the theme of the book. Prof. Jean Duffar has
provided an overall introduction to the subject, while Prof. Malcolm Evans has provided a synthesis

A Ritual-Liturgical Exploration of Reconciliation in South African Cultural Contexts
                                   WEPENER C.

The research described here aims at making a contribution towards the process of reconciliation in
South Africa by specifically looking at one small but important element in that process, namely ritual.
To this end several ritual probes were conducted, including an ethnographic probe describing research
by means of participatory observation in local South African communities, as well as a cultural-
anthropological, biblical, historical and descriptive probe. From these probes ritual qualities were
distilled which can be used for the liturgical inculturation of rituals of reconciliation in South Africa.

The discussion of the ‘return’ of ritual has developed into a topos in recent debates in theology and
cultural studies. Some see a real renaissance of ritual in western Europe. Others speak only of a new
awareness of ritual and the meaning which it has for individuals and society, as well as for religion
and the Church. What are the results of research with a view to the ‘ritual landscape’ in the fields of

                                  ALEXOPOULOS S.

The Presanctified Liturgy, a communion service attached to vespers, is an office peculiar to the period
of Great Lent in the Byzantine liturgical tradition. It is the ambition of this study to trace the origins,
the evolution and history of the Presanctified Liturgy in the Byzantine liturgical tradition. The
method of comparative liturgy and structural analysis of liturgical units is followed. The book presents
a thorough investigation of sources from the early Church that could point to the origins of
Presanctified Liturgy, and examines the occurrence of the Presanctified Liturgy in the other Christian
traditions. Heavily drawing upon the manuscript tradition it examines in depth the text of the
Presanctified Liturgy itself, tracing the evolution of its structural components throughout history. The
author argues that three dynamics have been behind the evolution and growth of the Presanctified

The Medieval Altarpiece in the Iberian Peninsula
                                  KROESEN J.E.A.

Spain and Portugal possess a wealth of medieval churches, including many with original furnishings.
Most outstanding of all is the altarpiece or ‘retablo’, the epitome of Iberian ecclesiastical art. With its
exceptional dimensions, architectural structure and extensive imagery, it became clearly distinct from
                                  altarpieces elsewhere in Europe.
The retable cannot be understood simply as an artistic genre, but must be viewed in its spatial sur-
roundings and against its religious and socio-cultural background. In the present study, the medieval
altarpiece in the Iberian Peninsula is approached as a witness to liturgy, faith and devotion.
Both as an art object and as a bearer of imagery, the altar retable played an important part in the
staging of liturgy in the medieval church of the Iberian Peninsula.

Quelle

The research of liturgical scholars was indirectly or directly influenced by the social and cultural pro-

given to the data studied. During the last few decades, these issues have frequently and thoroughly
been discussed by the Dutch liturgical scholars who are cooperating within the open, inter-confes-

During the long and impressive career of prof. Lambert Leijssen interesting ideas about sacraments,
liturgy, pastoral theology, and spirituality were crystallized. It would be sad if the generations after
prof. Leijssen would not be concerned anymore about these ideas. Therefore, the contributions in this
book in one way or another reflect prof. Leijssen’s major theological concerns. They have been taken
up in three parts. In the first part, Louis-Marie Chauvet, Jean-Yves Lacoste, George S. Wogul, and
Paul Post engage themselves in thoroughgoing fundamental reflections on the sacraments and the
liturgy. The second part consists of four contributions dealing with individual sacraments. Jozef

on the sacraments of initiation, the Eucharist, and marriage. The third part contains reflections on

After more than forty years of studying the subject matter of successful ageing, defining it from per-
spectives like dependence or psychological and physiological vitality, scholars have only at the end of

application of linguistic tools to the analysis of spiritual texts, showing how the tools can elucidate

EPIGONISM AND THE DYNAMIC OF CULTURE
                                      BERGER S., ZWIEP I.E. (EDS.)

Rather than continuing to view epigonism as a natural, if regrettable, part of the cultural process, an
inevitable secondary stage within the development of any corpus, the essays in this volume approach
the phenomenon from a perspective that is at once more neutral and more positive. They do so not
by rehabilitating the quality of the epigone’s output, but by redefining his role within the cultural
process per se. In each of these contributions, epigones appear as the true carriers of, in this case
Jewish, culture. Rather than mere witnesses or, at best, historical mirrors of primary, canonical, cul-
tural codes and modes, they represent one of the dynamic forces within the development of a culture.
For the epigone is not merely imitating, but also disseminating. It is not the isolated peaks of the

What does Yiddish have to do with German? It is a question that has perplexed Jews and Germans alike
for centuries. The relationship between the two languages – both originating from a common source and
from a common location – has often become a metaphor for the relationship of German and Jewish
societies, a relationship whose fraught and complex history is one of the most important in the study not
only of Jews, but of modern European history. The two languages and their literary cultures have con-
tinued their intimate and mutually nourishing relationship and exchange over the course of a millen-

during the last four centuries the relationship can be seen surprisingly clearly and profoundly in a broad

Our times are characterised by globalism and pluralism. Both characteristics are strongly intertwined.

book unlocks the hitherto ignored political aspect to Cudworth’s ethical philosophy. Through a

contextual account of Schopenhauer’s relation to the religions of India by placing his interpretation of

                                    ALFSVAG K.

Theology is, for the sake of its own clarity, dependent on a notion of God’s hiddenness and unknowa-
bility. This is a position that over the years has been maintained by a number of theologians and

Plato to the Reformation, focussing particularly on Maximus Confessor, Nicholas Cusanus and

and John Buridan. The Twenty-Five Disputed Questions on Logic treat of central issues in logic, both

                                     READ S.

The fourteenth-century thinker Thomas Bradwardine is well known in both the history of science and
the history of theology. The first of the Merton Calculators (mathematical physicists) and passionate
defender of the Augustinian doctrine of salvation through grace alone, he was briefly archbishop of
Canterbury before succumbing to the Black Death in 1349. This new edition of his Insolubilia, made
from all thirteen known manuscripts, shows that he was also a logician of the first rank. The edition
is accompanied by a full English translation. In the treatise, Bradwardine considers and rejects the
theories of his contemporaries about the logical puzzles known as “insolubles,” and sets out his own
solution at length and in detail. In a substantial introduction, Stephen Read describes Bradwardine’s
analysis, compares it with other more recent theories, and places it in its historical context. The text
is accompanied by three appendices, the first of which is an extra chapter found in two manuscripts
(and partly in a third) that appears to contain further thoughts by Bradwardine himself. The second

SCIENCE, DIALECTIQUE ET ÉTHIQUE CHEZ ARISTOTE
                                     Essais d’épistémologie aristotélicienne
                                     BOLTON R.

THE POLITICAL ETHICS OF JEAN-FRANCOIS LYOTARD
                                     AND JACQUES DERRIDA
                                     DE SCHRIJVER G.

A genuine political ethics seems to require a universal perspective, and yet we are told that the post-
modern age eschews universal perspectives. In this book, Georges De Schrijver argues that the leading
proponents of postmodernity have not, as is commonly assumed, abandoned the search for universals.
Rather they have sought to reshape the concept in ways that account for postmodernity’s critique.
Examining the thought of both Jean-François Lyotard, who prophesies the end of the grand stories,
and Jacques Derrida, the leading proponent of deconstruction, De Schrijver comes to the conclusion
that each, in his turn, is still in search of the universal. Underlying the thought of both men is a
profound appreciation for their Jewish ethical inheritance, an appreciation they learn from Emmanuel
Levinas. In passing judgment on the new world order, both authors go decidedly beyond Kant – and
• 2010 – Bibliotheca Ephemeridum thus beyond modernity – in reaching for a truly transcultural perspective in this era of globalization.
