IN 1954 NBA PLAYERS HAD NO PENSION, NO FREE AGENCY, NO PER DIEM, NO HEALTH BENEFITS, NO MINIMUM
SALARY AND THE AVERAGE ANNUAL SALARY WAS ABOUT $8,000. THAT YEAR A GROUP OF NBA ALL-STARS BEGAN
TO ORGANIZE THE PLAYERS AND EVENTUALLY FORMED THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION. TO-
DAY, OUR UNION’S MEMBERS ENJOY THE HIGHEST SALARIES OF ANY LABOR ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD. NBA
PLAYERS HAVE COME A LONG WAY AND THE NBPA HAS EVOLVED INTO A UNIQUE LABOR INSTITUTION. FOR OVER
40 YEARS, THE NBPA HAS FOUGHT TO PROMOTE THE BEST INTERESTS OF NBA PLAYERS. WHETHER WE ARE NE-
GOTIATING A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT, PROSECUTING A GRIEVANCE ON A PLAYER’S BEHALF, OR
COUNSELING A PLAYER ON BENEFITS OR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, OUR MISSION REMAINS THE SAME:
TO ENSURE THAT THE RIGHTS OF NBA PLAYERS ARE PROTECTED, AND THAT EVERYTHING POSSIBLE IS BEING
DONE TO HELP PLAYERS MAXIMIZE THEIR OPPORTUNITIES AND ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS ON AND OFF THE COURT.

THE NBPA STANDS READY TO SERVE OUR MEMBERS IN EVERY CAPACITY AND ADVANCE THEIR CAUSE. WE NEGOTIATE
THE TERMS OF A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT (“CBA”) WITH THE NBA, WHICH GOVERNS ALL ASPECTS OF
PLAYERS’ EMPLOYMENT. WE ENSURE THAT THE NBA AND ITS TEAMS MEET THEIR OBLIGATIONS UNDER THE CBA. WE
PROVIDE A FULL RANGE OF SERVICES AND ASSISTANCE THROUGH PLAYER SERVICES. WE MONITOR AND NEGOTIATE THE
ADMINISTRATION OF RETIREMENT AND INSURANCE BENEFITS. WE CERTIFY, REGULATE AND EDUCATE PLAYER AGENTS.
WE ASSIST CHARITY AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. WE PROMOTE THE IMAGE AND REPUTATION OF NBA PLAYERS
BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. WHATEVER THE TASK, THE NBPA IS UNQUESTIONABLY READY.
