SUMMARY: Positions in this class perform a variety of grounds keeping tasks in the City's parks and other grounds owned and maintained by the City. Incumbents operate grounds keeping equipment and a wide variety of hand tools, portable power tools and mowers to accomplish assigned duties. SCOPE: Reports to: Lead Park Maintenance Worker Independently performs varied grounds keeping assignments in accordance with specific procedures, know practices and under intermittent supervision. Receives specific instructions on new or unusual tasks or operations. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions at this level perform a variety of grounds keeping tasks under continuing supervision. Incumbents provide guidance to less experienced workers and receive guidance on more complex or usual tasks and activities. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outdoors subjecting employees to inclement weather. Work involves heavy physical labor, the use of ladders and working in cramped and confined areas. Workers are exposed to the dangers related to the use of motorized grounds keeping equipment and poisonous or noxious chemicals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Mows lawns using a riding or hand mower. • • • • • Removes leaves using a gas powered blower and leaf vacuum to remove leaves; hand rakes areas as needed. Edges lawn and shrub beds. Removes weeds from flower and shrub beds. Performs minor pruning of trees and shrubs. Makes minor repairs to grounds keeping equipment.

Maintains and prepares athletic fields; fertilizes turf areas. Plants turf; lays topsoil, seeds and fertilizes. Collects and removes litter from City-owned grounds; removes and disposes of broken branches and other debris, using chipper.

OTHER JOB DUTIES: • Assists in park construction projects, in installing and repairing irrigation systems, planting trees, shrubs and flowers. QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Training: High School Diploma or GED required. Some experience at operating power mowers, power hand tools, grinders, edgers and grounds keeping equipment; or any combination of training and experience that would provide the desired knowledge, skills and abilities. Licensing and Certification: Valid Washington State driver's license with driving record free from serious or frequent violations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance. • • • • Basic working knowledge of crafts such as carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing. Ability to use a variety of hand tools and motorized grounds keeping equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Physical strength and ability sufficient to meet job requirements for extended period under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather. May involve lifting up to 100 lbs. and hard manual labor.
