JOB OBJECTIVES Under direction, to supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for comprehensive recreation programs within the Parks & Recreation Department; to promote and elicit community support for program activities; to develop and implement programs in response to community needs; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
1. Supervise, assign, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for recreation programs including special events, sport leagues, senior citizen events, youth programs and outdoor events; to promote and elicit community support for program activities; and perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. 2. Organize, coordinate, implement and supervise the day to day operations of assigned recreational programs and activities; establish schedules and methods for providing recreation programs including special events, sport leagues, senior citizens events, youth programs and outdoor events 3. Participate in the recruitment and selection of seasonal recreation staff for assigned area; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures. 4. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing recreational services; maintain personnel records including attendance and performance records as required; submit payroll. 5. Schedule usage of recreational facilities for activities; provide information and assistance to users of facilities; monitor, inspect and secure recreation facilities; schedule maintenance. 6. Monitor program compliance with applicable laws, rules and safety regulations related to the provision of assigned recreation programs and related services. 7. Promote and coordinate specific activities within a recreation program; prepare program event and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures. 8. Solicit and incorporate community and staff input for program improvements, new programs and events; develop innovative ways to increase revenue for programs and events.

9. Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; maintain records for registrations and fees collected; maintain and file accident reports; prepare statistical reports as required. 10. Serve as a liaison to supervisory staff, employees, the general public, program participants, concession contractors, sport official associations, league sanctioning agencies, the media and other groups. 11. Participate in the development of policies and procedures for assigned service area; participate in the establishment and implementation of cash control policies and procedures at all facilities. AUXILIARY FUNCTION STATEMENTS 1. Write proposals and grants for recreation department use. 2. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area. 3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of assigned recreational programs. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Principles and practices of recreational program development and implementation. Procedures, methods and techniques of budget preparation and administration. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and safety regulations. Marketing theories, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of recreation program areas. Modern office equipment including computer operations and maintenance. Rules and equipment used in various recreational activities. Principles and practices of basic first aid. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions. Ability to: Coordinate, direct and implement recreation programs suited to the needs of the community. Supervise, organize, train and evaluate the work of assigned personnel. Recommend and implement goals, objectives and practices for providing effective and efficient recreation programs. Elicit community and organizational support for recreation programs; present material to general public. Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.

Respond to emergency situations and perform first aid as necessary. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, recreation administration or a related field. Experience: Three years of experience in the coordination or implementation of recreational programs including one year supervisory experience of an aquatics facility. License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate, valid state driver’s license. Possession of an appropriate, valid First Aid/CPR certification. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment: Normal office setting with some travel to attend meetings; some work in outdoor settings; exposure to adverse weather and pool chemicals. Mobility: Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work in an office setting, operating office equipment. Vision: Vision sufficient to read computer screens and other printed documents, and to operate assigned equipment. Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.
