Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

JOB OBJECTIVES Under general supervision, to perform heavy manual labor in the collection and disposal of commercial and residential refuse; to operate and maintain sanitation vehicles; to maintain a variety of routine records; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

1. Perform heavy manual labor in the collection and disposal of refuse; lift, carry and dump refuse containers into dumpster or truck; push or pull refuse containers to hydraulic lift. 2. Operate a sanitation vehicle to pick up and dispose of refuse and garbage; collect commercial and residential garbage, refuse and trash according to an assigned route. 3. Perform safety checks on all vehicles; fill vehicles with fuel as necessary; schedule maintenance or repairs as needed; wash sanitation trucks. 4. Maintain a variety of records including oil and fuel usage and amount of refuse in excess of normal service. 1. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public regarding sanitation collection and disposal operations. AUXILIARY FUNCTION STATEMENTS 1. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area. 2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of a sanitation collection and disposal program. Operational characteristics of various sanitation collection and disposal equipment and vehicles. Principles and practices of record keeping. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.

Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations. Ability to: Perform heavy manual labor in the collection and disposal of refuse. Operate a variety of refuse collection equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Ensure proper and safe operation and maintenance of refuse collection vehicles. Maintain accurate and current records. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Experience: One year of equipment operation experience is desirable. License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate, valid commercial driver’s license. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment: Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, inclement weather conditions. Mobility: Heavy, moderate or light lifting; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operate heavy equipment. Vision: Visual acuity to operate a vehicle. Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.
