                              Number of antenatal care (ANC) visits

                                                                                                              The survey in 2005 showed that approximately

                              Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) at delivery
  Utilization of services

                                                                                                          Three quarters of all maternal deaths occur during
                                                                                                          delivery and the immediate post-partum period. One
                                                                                                          of the critical interventions for safe motherhood is to

                                                                                                              Women’s wealth status is one of the determinants
                                                                                                              of receiving skilled care. Women at the poorest
                                                                                                              situation had apprimately 4 times less access to
                                                                                                              skilled care compared to their richest counterparts.

                                       Malaria in pregnancy
        Use of insecticide treated net
                                                                                                                    Among pregnant women, 86% reported to have
                                                                                                                    slept under a net, 9% slept under an ever-treated
                                                                                                                    net, and 4.1% slept under an ITN the night before
                                                                                                                    the interview.
                                                                                                                    (1) An ever-treated net: pretreated net or a
                                                                                                                    non-pretreated net which has subsequently been
                                                                                                                    soaked with insecticide at any time
                                                                                                                    (2) Aninsecticide-treated net (ITN) is 1) factory
                                                                                                                    treated net that does not required any further
                                                                                                                    treatment, or 2) a pretreated net obtained within
                                                                                                                    the past 12 months, or 3) a net that has been
                                                                                                                    soaked with insecticide within the past 12 months.

                                                        HIV in pregnancy
    HIV counselling and testing for pregnant women in ANC visits
                                                                                                                              16% of pregnant women aged 15–49 received HIV
                                                                                                                              counselling during their ANC visits. Of those 12%
                                                                                                                              of women voluntarily tested for HIV, 11% received
                                                                                                                              results; 8% were counselled and tested for HIV and
                                                                                                                              received their results.




    (1) counselled refers to the condition that following three dialogues were exchanged with the respondent: babies getting the AIDS virus from their mother, preventing the virus,
    getting tested for the virus.
    (2) Questions were asked to women who were offered the test. Thus, women who were either required or asked for the test are excluded from the numerator of this measure.

                                    Use of modern contraceptives (2005)
                            % of currently married women using modern contraceptives




                                                                                                                                                At national level, 27% of currently married women
                                                                                                                                                were reported to use modern contraceptive
                                                                                                                                                methods. Women residing in urban areas were
                                                                                                                                                observed with a slightly higher use of modern
                                                                                                                                                contraceptive methods (31%) than women in rural
                                                                                                                                                areas (27%).

                                                                                                                           Data indicated that the prevalence increased
                                                                                                                           with age and peaked at the age group of 35-39
