Alkaline Spray Wash Cleaner
Description
Castrol Kleen 5001 is designed for use in all types of industrial spray washing equipment, including intensive flood washers. Castrol Kleen 5001 is formulated with iron corrosion inhibition and multi-metal compatibility.
Performance Benefits
Low foam eliminates foam-outs in spray washers and enhances performance in transfer lines. Slight, imperceptible film residue provides in-process corrosion protection. Moderate pH reduces the possibility of skin irritations. Soils Removed With Castrol Kleen 5001 Adhesive compounds Crankcase and light gear oils Grinding oils Heat treat oils Heavy forming oils Heavy viscosity oils Hydraulic oils Lapping compounds Light forming oils Lubricating greases Lubricating oils Medium viscosity cutting oils Polishing compounds Pressing compounds Thick soft-film rust preventives Thin soft-film rust preventives
Metal Safety
Castrol Kleen 5001 can be safely used on ferrous and nonferrous metals. However, it may stain aluminum at high temperatures. Consult your Castrol Sales Engineer for questions regarding compatibility.

Case History
Account: Manufacturer of automobile crankshafts Customer need: The manufacturer wanted a cleaning fluid to provide corrosion protection and remove mineral seal oil, metallic fines and graphite from nodular cast iron crankshafts. Prior to cleaning, the crankshaft rod and bearing journals are lapped with lapping paper and mineral seal oil. The crankshafts are then spray washed with a low pressure, two-stage, ambient temperature washer with no filtration or free oil capabilities. Operating pressures in both the rinse and wash operations are 40 - 60 psi. Once clean, the crankshafts are gauged and inspected before shipment to the assembly line. The previous cleaning fluid worked well. It lasted ten weeks without generating rancid odors. Nevertheless, it was expensive and highly alkaline (pH of the concentrate was 12+). Castrol Kleen 5001 is charged in the 2,000 gallon washer in 6 - 8 grain water. Since there is no filtration, free oil is decanted from the top of the cleaner tanks a few times per week. The low alkalinity of Castrol Kleen 5001 improved operator safety. The slight film residue left from washing with Castrol Kleen 5001 provides the corrosion protection needed. Furthermore, the manufacturer saves an average of $7,800 annually with the less expensive Castrol Kleen 5001.

Concentration Control
By titration: 1. Place (pipet) 50 ml sample of Castrol Kleen 5001 solution into a flask or beaker. 2. Titrate 1.0 N sulfuric acid from a buret until reaching 4.6 on the pH meter. 3. The concentration of the Castrol Kleen 5001 solution in % (v/v) can be calculated by multiplying the volume of 1.0 N sulfuric acid in ml by the concentration factor. 4. Prior to running tests on field samples, follow the above method using a sample of known concentration to obtain the concentration factor. Concentration factor = % known concentration/ml acid needed to reach the end point. With Hach kit: Add 1 vial of Castrol Kleen 5001 solution and 1 pillow of indicator to mixing bottle. Count the drops of 1.0 N sulfuric acid required to change the color of the solution from green to pink. Concentration % (v/v) Drops 1 2 2 3 3 5 4 7 5 9 10 17
