One Step Away from Triple Crown History
In order to win the Triple Crown, a horse must win three races, each performed about 2-3 weeks after the other, in order, during a single calendar year:
The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky The Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland The Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Belmont, New York
Famed Horses to Win the Crown:
Affirmed, 1978 The last thoroughbred to win in 30 years. Held a famous rivalry with Alydar who came in 2nd place in every Triple Crown race. Secretariat, 1973 Answers a 25-year drought by winning solidly in all three races. Still holds the track records for two of the three Triple Crown races. Citation, 1948 one of only two horses (the other being Cigar) to win 16 major horse racing championships in a row. War Admiral, 1937 Sired by the great Man O' War - Despite this great honor he later lost by four lengths to Seabiscuit in 1938 at Pimlico - the subject of many books and a very good 2005 movie.
