Xbox Mod Chip … Not Something to Eat but Rather to Hack If you have never heard of the Xbox mod chip, no need to fret. Chances are you can enjoy a lifetime of happy video gaming without ever needing to think about getting a mod chip. A mod chip is short for a modification chip. What are these notorious mod chip? Who uses them, and for what purposes? Xbox mod chips are devices that are used for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons why someone may choose to download a mod chip for their Xbox video game console system is to play import, homebrew games, or backup games. Modchips are also notoriously used to circumvent the official digital rights management of the Xbox and other popular video game console systems. All of the popular modern video game console systems contain some kind of hardware-based operations that ensure that only official games can be played on the system. These operations are responsible for the regional lockout feature of these systems. Your DVD player operates with digital rights management technology as well. That's why you can only play certain region DVDs on your DVD player. If you try to watch a DVD that does not correspond with your player's region code, it will refuse to play. Modchips try to go around these official restrictions. They are, in a sense, breaking the official rules. This is why modchips have received their share of controversy and criticism. Every gaming console uses a different kind of hardware-based scheme designed to implement these regional lockout restrictions. The Xbox, for instance, uses a special cryptographic signing system. If you are one of those video gamers who are interested in the modchip and what it can do, but you don't have much technical experience, the process of installing a modchip can be difficult. Most modchips do require some level of technical experience in order to correctly install them in the video game console. In most cases, installing requires that you hand solder the modchip onto your video game console's motherboard. However, there are several no-solder required installation kits that have made the process of installing a modchip increasingly accessible. How did modchips first come into existence? Why would anyone want to solder a special chip onto the motherboard of his or her beloved video game console system? Originally, gamers used modchips so that they could get access to import games. The first modchips were used with the original Sonly PlayStation. Gamers found that they could play the most highly coveted import games on their PlayStation game consoles simply by installing a modchip that would effectively 'inject' the region code of the import game into the data stream of their system. The modchip also had a somewhat accidental side effect: players found that they could play copied games on their video game consoles as well. However, all is not perfect in the world of modchipping. There are some known disadvantages to using modchips with your system. Of course, one of the biggest drawbacks for most people is that installing a modchip is technically illegal. Another major drawback is that modchipping can cause permanent damage to your beloved (and expensive) game console. So if you are not absolutely sure about how to do it right, you may be risking losing your gaming console altogether. Another major drawback of
installing a modchip onto your Xbox system is that you may no longer have access to the mega popular Xbox Live website. Moreover, some video games are programmed to search for modchips. If a program checks and detects that a modchip has been installed onto your system, it may refuse to play.
