Sub: Depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal

        Latest satellite imagery indicates that a depression has formed over southwest and adjoining
southeast Bay of Bengal and lay centred at 1430 hours IST of today, the 10th December 2009 near lat. 6.50
N and long. 85.00 E, about 400 km east-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 750 km southeast of
Nagapattinam and 900 km southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to intensify into a deep depression
and move in a west-northwesterly direction towards east coast of Sri Lanka during next 48 hours.

           Under its influence, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely to
commence over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 12th December 2009. Increase in rainfall
activities with scattered heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls is likely over south
coastal Tamil Nadu from 13th December 2009 onwards.

          Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely to commence along and
off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts from tomorrow, the 11th December 2009. Sea condition will be
rough to very rough along and off these coasts. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along
and off these coasts.

         Next bulletin will be issued at 2030 hrs IST of today, the 10th December 2009

          The depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal remained practically
stationary and lay centred at 1730 hours IST of today, the 10th December 2009 near lat. 6.50 N and long.
85.00 E, about 400 km east-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 750 km southeast of Nagapattinam and
900 km southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to intensify into a deep depression and move in a west-
northwesterly direction towards east coast of Sri Lanka during next 48 hours.

       Sub: Deep depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal

           The depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards,
intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 11 th December 2009
near lat. 7.00 N and long. 84.50 E, about 350 km east-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 650 km southeast
of Nagapattinam and 800 km southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to intensify further and move in a
west-northwesterly direction. The system is likely to cross Sri Lanka coast between lat. 8.50 N and 9.50 N
by evening of tomorrow, the 12th December, 2009.
          Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other conventional
techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

        Sub: Cyclone Alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast: Yellow Message

           The deep depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwards and lay

centred at 1130 hours IST of today, the 11 December 2009 near lat. 8.0 N and long. 84.5 E, about 300 km east of
Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 580 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 700 km southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to
intensify further into a cyclonic storm and move in a northwesterly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast skirting, Sri
Lanka coast during next 48 hours.
           However, satellite derived steering wind in upper troposphere suggests the possibility of northerly/
northeasterly movement of the system. Considering all the above the system is under watch.
        Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other conventional
techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

           The deep depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved further northwards,

8.5 N and long. 84.5 E, about 300 km east-northeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 550 km southeast of Nagapattinam
and 700 km south-southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to move in a northwesterly direction towards Tamil
Nadu coast during next 48 hours.

           The cyclonic storm ‘WARD’ over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal remained practically

about 300 km east-northeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 550 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 700 km south-
southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to move in a northwesterly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast during next
48 hours.
           However, satellite derived steering wind in upper troposphere suggests the possibility of northerly/
northeasterly movement of the system. Considering all the above, the system is under watch.
        Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other conventional
techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

Chennai. The system is likely to move in a northwesterly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast.
           Latest observations show sign of weakening of the system.
          Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other conventional
techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

southwest Bay of Bengal near lat. 10.00 N and long. 83.50 E, about 450 km east-northeast of
Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 400 km east-southeast of Nagapattinam and 450 km east-northeast of
Pamban. The system is likely to move in a west-southwesterly direction and cross north Sri Lanka
near Lat. 9.00 N around noon of tomorrow, the 13th December, 2009. It is then likely to emerge
into Gulf of Mannar and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Kanyakumari and Pamban
around night of 13th December, 2009. However latest observations show sign of weakening of the
system.

yesterday, 12th December 2009 near lat. 9.50 N and long. 83.50 E, about 350 km east-northeast of
Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 400 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 450 km east-northeast of Pamban.
The system is likely to move in a west-southwesterly direction and cross north Sri Lanka near Lat.
9.00 N around noon of today, the 13th December, 2009. It is then likely to emerge into Gulf of

Sub: Deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
          Yesterday’s deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved westward and lay
centred at 0530 hours IST of today, 13th December 2009 near lat. 9.50 N and long. 83.00 E, about
320 km east-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 360 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 400 km east-
northeast of Pamban. The system is likely to move in a west-southwesterly direction and cross
north Sri Lanka near Lat. 9.00 N around evening of today, the 13th December, 2009. It is then
likely to emerge into Gulf of Mannar and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Kanyakumari and
Pamban around noon of 14th December, 2009.
          Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other
conventional techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

to 70 kmph is also likely along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during next 24
hours. Sea condition will be high along and off south Tamil Nadu coast and very rough to high

         The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary and
lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, 13th December 2009 near lat. 9.50 N and long. 83.00 E,
about 200 km northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 360 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 400
km east-northeast of Pamban. The system is likely to move in a west-southwesterly direction and
cross north Sri Lanka near Lat. 9.00 N around early morning of tomorrow, the 14th December,
2009. It is then likely to emerge into Gulf of Mannar and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between

Sub: Deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
            The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved further southwestwards and
lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, 14th December 2009 over southwest Bay of Bengal near
lat. 8.50 N and long. 81.50 E, close to Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), about 300 km southeast of
Nagapattinam and 250 km east-southeast of Pamban. The system is likely to move in a westerly
direction and cross north Sri Lanka coast close to Trincomalee within a few hours. Subsequently,
it is likely to move in a westerly direction, emerge into Gulf of Mannar and cross south Tamil Nadu
coast between Kanyakumari and Pamban around afternoon of tomorrow, the 15th December,
2009. However the system shows sign of further weakening.
            Based on latest analysis with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other
conventional techniques, estimated track and intensity of the system are given in the Table below:

        Squally winds speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 Kmph are likely along and off
south Tamil Nadu coast during next 36 hours . Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting
to 65 kmph is also likely along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during next 24
hours. Sea condition will be very rough to high along and off south Tamil Nadu coast and rough to
very rough along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

         The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved slightly westwards and lay
centred at 1130 hours IST of today, 14th December 2009 near lat. 8.50 N and long. 81.50 E, very
close to Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), about 300 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 250 km east-
southeast of Pamban. The system is likely to move in a westerly direction and cross north Sri
Lanka coast close to Trincomalee within a few hours. Subsequently, it is likely to move in a

       The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal crossed north Sri Lanka coast near
Trincomalee (Sri Lanka) between 1330 and 1430 hours IST of today, the 14 th December 2009
and lay as a depression over north Sri Lanka near lat. 8.50 N and long. 81.00 E, close to
Trincomalee at 1430 his IST. It is likely to move in a westerly direction, emerge into Gulf of
Mannar and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Kanyakumari and Pamban around
afternoon of tomorrow, the 15th December, 2009.

     Sub: Depression weakened into a well marked low pressure area over Sri Lanka.

        The depression over north Sri Lanka weakened further and lay as a well marked low
pressure area over Sri Lanka and neighborhood at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 15 th December,
2009. It is likely to move westwards and emerge into Gulf of Mannar during next 24 hrs. There is
a probability of intensification of the system over the Gulf of Mannar. The system is under watch.
        Under its influence, rainfall at most places with scattered heavy and isolated very heavy
to extremely heavy falls (>_25 cm) is likely over coastal Tamilnadu and Puducherry during next
48 hours. Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is also likely over
interior Tamil Nadu during the same period.
      Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely along and off

             Sub: Low pressure area over Gulf of Mannar and neighbourhood

       The well marked low pressure area over Sri Lanka and neighbourhood moved westwards
and lay as a low pressure area over Gulf of Mannar and neighborhood at 1730 hrs IST of today,
the 15th December, 2009.

        Under its influence, rainfall at most places with scattered heavy and isolated very heavy
to extremely heavy falls (>25 cm) is likely over coastal Tamilnadu and Puducher ry during next
36 hours. Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to ve ry heavy falls is also likely over
interior Tamil Nadu during the same period.

       Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely along and off
south Tamil Nadu coast during next 12 hours. Sea condition will be rough to ve ry rough along
and off south Tamil Nadu coast.

     Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Sea along and off Tamil Nadu &
Puducherry coast during next 12 hours.
