Admissions Requirements: Dental Hygiene Program

All applicants to the Dental Hygiene Program at Tunxis Community College (TCC) must submit the following:

    •    A TCC application with the $20.00 application fee
    •    Dental Hygiene Program application
    •    Official high school and college transcripts
    •    Two letters of recommendation
    •    A Personal Statement
         (Please provide a comprehensive biographical sketch of no more than 250 words that includes
         information to assist the Admissions Committee in “getting to know you better”. Examples of information
         that might be included in your biographical sketch include but are not limited to: details regarding dental
         hygiene procedures you have observed, a description of community service projects in which you have
         participated, and information concerning your interests, abilities and attitudes that have motivated you to
         make the commitment required for a career in dental hygiene).


Note: Students who are currently TCC students do not have to submit another college application. Students who have
      attended another Connecticut Community College do not have to pay the $20.00 application fee, but must
      complete a TCC application.


Dental Hygiene students are admitted for the fall term only. The application deadline for admission to the Dental
Hygiene program is December 31, for the next academic year.


The following courses must be completed prior to the application deadline:

    •    Applicants must complete English 101, Chemistry 111, Anatomy and Physiology I, (Note: Anatomy
         and Physiology I at TCC has Biology 121 as a prerequisite). All science courses must be taken
         within five (5) years of applying to the program and be four (4) credits with a laboratory component.
    •    Applicants must be ready for college level math, evidenced either by successful completion of MAT*095
         Elementary Algebra (at TCC) with a grade of C or better, or by placement into college level math (Math
         137 or higher) on Accuplacer. It is highly recommended that students complete Math 137 Intermediate
         Algebra prior to the start of the program. Note: A minimum combined GPA in prerequisite courses
         of 2.7 is required.
    •    Applicants must attend a Dental Hygiene information session. Attendance will be verified with a
         certificate issued by the session presenter.

    •    Applicants are encouraged to complete all science and general education courses prior to applying to
         the program.


   High school students may only meet the above program prerequisites by completing the equivalent
   Advanced Placement (AP) course work and passing the AP final with a grade of “3” or better.


   Prior to starting the program in the fall semester, applicants must:
       • Complete Anatomy and Physiology II with a grade of C or better.
       • Complete either Microbiology or Nutrition for the Health Care Professionals with a grade of C or
            better. If these courses are in progress at the time of interview, applicant must provide mid-
            term grades for evaluation.

Transfer Students–Dental Hygiene
Students currently enrolled in an accredited dental hygiene program who have good academic standing will
be considered for transfer on a space available basis. An assessment of the student’s clinical skills will be
made to determine placement and sequencing of courses. Note: Students who have attended another
Connecticut Community College do not have to pay the $20.00 application fee, but must complete a TCC
application.
