Description

At the top of the All Africa Stock Markets table this week was the Nigerian Exchange with a 5% rise in its level. Other gainers were markets in Mauritius and Morocco. The Ghana Stock Exchange languished at the bottom of the table though, as financial stocks took a beating this week. In all, more markets have recorded positive year-to-date returns at the week’s close than at the end of the first quarter. In the black now are bourses in Mauritius, Tunisia, Egypt, South Africa and Namibia. We expect more gainers across the African markets next week.

The creation of an African Guarantee Fund in partnership with the African Development Bank aimed mobilizing loans for three billion USD and reducing the cost of access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises, SME’s. Ensuring access to energy at the local level by launching a new initiative in partnership with the EU and the African Development Bank. Improving the business climate and Africa’s competitive edge by making sure that the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report covers all African countries. Unleashing the power of African entrepreneurship, both in start-up and existing enterprises, by providing advisory services and access to finance in order to allow young people to translate their good ideas into practical plans. The initiative will be implemented in partnership with the ILO and Youth Employment Network Supporting higher education and research. Specifically, the initiative will increase the quantity and quality of artisans through apprenticeships, especially in the rural areas. Also, it will link tertiary research and business practices especially to expanding agricultural output. Oil’s edged up by $0.57 to $58.53 per barrel. Gold and Coffee were also up $11.9 and 0.85 cents to $927.20 per ounce and 127.55 cents per lb respectively. Cedi Depreciation Against Major Trading Currencies 10.00% 5.00% 0.00% -5.00% -10.00% -15.00% -20.00% Cocoa however dropped $128 off its price to $2,330 per metric tonne. We believe that despite the recent price surges in oil, this is unlikely to be sustained in the face of dwindling demand. OPEC has conceded a slump in demand, blaming pure market sentiments for the rise in price. This does not however mean that prices will fall promptly back next week; as these sentiments would keep prices up for sometime till the full impact of the fundamentals step in. Ghana Currency Market Update The Ghana cedi depreciated against the dollar, pound and euro on the Interbank Market this week. The cedi depreciated by GH¢0.0040 and GH¢0.00327 to GH¢1.4090 and GH¢2.1449 against the dollar and pound respectively. The local currency also lost GH¢0.0315 against the euro to GH¢1.9152. $ £ EURO Databank GHANA MARKET STATISTICS Indicators DSI (GH ¢) DSI ($) GSE (GH ¢) Mkt Cap (GH¢’bn) P/E (x) Dividend Yield (%) Earnings Yield (%) Level 9,190.87 0.65 7,955.18 16.44 22.48 2.47 4.45 Change (%) -2.75% -3.03% -9.07% -2.72% -1.78 0.18 0.33 YTD (%) -22.80% -33.52% -24.05% -7.58% − − − 7 Laggards as DSI nears 9,000 Points Activity improved this week with regards to the total volume of shares traded; however aggregate turnover recorded a decline.
