Who is Check 21?
Getting to Know
Hello there! It is I, the famous Check 21. What? You've never heard of me? Surely you jest!
CHECK 21
'm now going to tell you about Electronic Check Conversion. Lets review the golden rule of check writing one more time (like I said before): "Before you write a check, you better have the money in your account to cover the check." With Electronic Check Conversion, you can write a check to pay a bill or to make a purchase at a store that accepts checks. When you pay the bill or make your purchase, instead of your check being processed as a check (i.e. sent to your financial institution for payment, electronically or otherwise), it is processed as an electronic payment. This means that the amount of the check is deducted from your account at the time of the payment of the bill or the time of the purchase. You should never be surprised when Electronic Check Conversion takes place as merchants (or anyone else that you are paying) are required to give you notice that this is how they process checks. This notice can be on your billing statement; or if you are in a store, it can be as simple as a notice on the wall.
Okay, there’s one more aspect of myself (Check 21, that’s me) that I need to tell you about. Don’t worry- it’s nothing awful.
I
I hope you feel like you’ve gotten to know me better because soon you’re going to want or need your own checking account and then you’ll be glad you got to know Check 21 (that’s me!).
Now, let me introduce you to a good friend of mine, First Financial Federal Credit Union. When you are ready for your own checking account, be sure to compare 2 or 3 different accounts and find the one best suited to your needs. Include First Financial Federal Credit Union's FREE Checking Account in your comparison. Its features include:
ell, you do need to get to know me better -especially when you open your first checking account. So, allow me to once again introduce myself - I am Check 21, a federal law which became effective in October of 2004. No, lets not throw me a big birthday bash (I am turning 2 this year, you know); instead lets just become more familiar with what I am all about - my quirks, my likes, my dislikes, you know…the details of my life.
W
First, what I’m not all about. I have absolutely nothing to do with voting, driving, registering for the selective service or any of the other things that happen when you become adults.
I do, however, have much to do with how the checks that you write (from your checking account) are processed. Check 21 (yes, that's me) makes check processing faster. Instead of sending paper checks between financial institutions for processing; financial institutions can now exchange this information electronically. I know, I know - what does this mean for you? Faster check processing means that when you write a check, the money can be deducted from your account sooner (i.e. your check can clear quicker). Bottom line: before you write a check, you better have the money in your account to cover the check.
A few items for you to remember about Electronic Check Conversion: l You should always receive a receipt l Your receipt amount should match the amount of the purchase l Your check should always be returned back to you (and should be marked "Void") l You need to have the funds in your account at the time of the payment/ purchase; or you will need to have an alternate form of payment l If you do not want your check processed as an Electronic Check Conversion you don't have to; but then you will have to have an alternate form of payment
