A lot of pianists learn how to play piano without reading music, ever.
They still use the basics of theory, to get started, for example to learn
chords, scales, and popular patterns, but they will train themselves to play
piano by ear, rather than relying on a musical score (written music).

Playing by ear is a very positive thing for beginners learning to play
piano, and some of the best pianists in the world can’t read music, they
play purely by ear, this method of learning to play piano enables you to put
a lot more feeling into your songs, and very often musicians that play just
by relying on a score, don’t seem to have any dynamic in their playing.

A good way to learn how to play some songs without written music, is to
pick a particular song that you are very familiar with, try to pick something
fairly simple to start with, and to then learn what chords are in it. If you
have the music playing on your stereo, try and pin point a few main
chords, and then work out the rest from there. For the rhythm focus on
one of the chords initially, and keep playing this, until you find a suitable
rhythm for it.

Learning with the help of a piano chord chart:

If you are going to teach yourself to play piano, you will need to know
individual piano chords. You can get them by doing a search on the
internet if you need too. Or you can click on the following link to
download a Piano Chords For Beginners Chart for FREE.

After a while you will find a method that works best for you, for some it’s
a matter of listening to a CD, and playing by ear along to it, for others its
finding the piano chords out from another source and having a song sheet
to follow, or you could mix both of these, but whichever way you do it, I
can guarantee you will be completely satisfied and the end result being that
you have learnt to play a tune on the piano without relying on sheet music.

Another good way to train yourself to play by ear is to try and figure out
some melodies of your own. Find some chords that you like the sound of
so maybe two MAJOR & two MINOR chords, and try putting something
together from these. You will be surprised how good they sound.

If learning to play keyboard or piano by ear seems a little too unstructured
for your liking, you may prefer to learn by following a comprehensive
course of online piano lessons specifically targeted to your own ability,
whether that be beginner or intermediate right up to advanced.

Whichever way you choose to learn, the ability to sit and play the
piano will will be a constant joy for the rest of your life.
